A BISSHOP'S SUGGESTION.

THE CHURCH AND CIVIC LIFE. (Sy Te'iCffraDii.— Special Correspondent.) Auckland, May 17. Amongst the many letters of congratulations received by Mr. L. .1. Bagnall on his election to the Mayoralty of Auckland was one from the Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Xeligan) in which his Lordship made a rather interesting suggestion. In the Old Country, Dr. Xoligan stated, it. is almost universally the custom *or the Mayor of a dry or borough on air early Sunday after his election to ollicinlly attend public worship in the parish church of the city or boraush. The Bishop concluded ilis letter by saying he did not know wlietlier Mr. liairnall was a. member of the Anglican communion, but if the jii'iv Mayor toll disposed to inaugurate such a practice

i here, and should wish for the use oi St. . Matthew's Church or St. Mary's Cathedral, the vicnr of either church would ' ?A-.uU\- a«QV Ms cluirdi for such a puri poso, mid if Mr. BngnnU so desired lie (the Bishop) would regard it as a privi--3 lego to be the preacher on such .in occasion. , Iu reply the Mayor wrote thanking the 1 Bishop for I lie suggestion and stated he 1 would be . pleased to establish such a r precedent by oflieially attending his own 1 placo of worship—St. Andrew's Presbyj terian Church—next Sunday morning. 1 The Bishop, in acknowledging the j Mayor's letter wrote: "1 am really very 5 grateful to you for so kindly receiving my suggestion, and I am more thankful than 1 can say that you propose to act upon it. The" principle is, as you say, the official attendance of tho Mayor and 1 councillors at public worship, and I - agree with you that it is seemly that • it ought to be at a church belonging to • the particular communion of which tho 1 Mayor for the time being is a member. . 1 very sincerely trust that you will be i able to inaugurate this very laudable ' : practice, and that the result will bo for the welfare of our civic life." Mr. Bagnall has invited as many of the city councillors as desire to accompany him to St. Andrew's Church next Sunday morning when tho Moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly of New Zealand (the Hcv. I. Jolly, M.A.) will conduct the service. At the Y.M.C.A. last evening, Mr. J. Cau"hley gave an interesting lecture mi "Water,'" illustrated by scientific experiments.
