MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Riddel!, B.M.J . NON-PAYING PASSENGER ON'S.S. ITARAWERA. A plea of guilty was entered by Arthur Fletcher, charged with having travelled between Wellington and Lyttol--9 ton on the steamer Tarawera without paying his fare and with intent to evade payment thereof. In evidence it was mentioned that defendant was formerly employed by tho Union Company. He had applied to tho company's Christchurch office for a free pass to Wellington where his clothes and some other articles were. ,He was refused a free trip, but had boarded the boat as the only way of making his way north and thus recovering possession of his effects. A conviction nnd order to pay tho fore, 12s. Gd., was entered, the default being fixed at 48 hours' imprisonment. MERE PAPER AS CURRENCY! A well-dressed young man named Herbert Thornton Shearman'was charged (1) I with having at Christchurch on March ~12 from. Ejank Drewith by ! means of false pretences, and ■ (2) with having on March It obtained JC6 from F. Drewith by means of false pretences. I- It was stated in evidence accused arrived at Christchurch from the West Coast on March 12 in company with a friend .with whom he stayed at the Queen's Hotel. During his stay there he cashed tho two cheques mentioned. Both of them were dishonoured. Accused handed in a statement, the ■ contents of which, his Worship said, showed that accused had acted foolishly. A sentence of three months' imprisonment wns imposed on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently. OTHER CASES. Henry Burrows was charged (1) v.itli Insobriety, and (2) with having used obscene language. It was stated that accused went to the Labour Bureau in a drunken condition and when put out of the premises ho used tho language complained of. On the first charge he was convicted and discharged, and on the second was convicted and fined £o ' in default 21 'lays' imprisonment. ' Herbert Reeve, remanded from Monday for sentence on a charge of being it "rogue and vagabond, was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on, on condition that he went into the Ohiro Home nnd remained there for a term of six months. Elizabeth Allison Woods, charged with insobriety, was convicted and fined 55., with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment. One first offender was convicted, and fined 55., in default 24 hours' imprisonment.
