ALDERMAN OF THE L.C.C.

The name of Lady St Helier recently appeared as ono of tho ten persons nominated by the Municipal Reform party on the London County "Council to serve as aldermen, says an English paper. Hers was the only woman's name put forward in this connection.- This is not the first time that' a woman has been nominated for an aldcrmanic vacancy. Miss Cons was an alderman of the council for a brief space, until, through tho action of Mr. Beresford-Hope in tho Courts, women were deprived of tho opportunity of becoming members of county councils. It has taken many years to restore women to the position which they were . supposed to occupy at tho time when county councils came into being, and oven now the proportion of educated adult women, whether sing!} or married,' qualified by law to take part in municipal government as voters or councillors is distressingly email. Lady St. Helier has a wide knowledge of affairs, and considerable practical gifts. She has been a manager of schools in London for twenty-eight years, 2nd became a co-opted member of the Education Committee of the London County Council in 1907, of which she ha-s now become a duly-appointed member, together with seven other ladies. She has taken an active part in tho promotion of many charitable organisations, especially those concerned with the welfare of children. Sho is the author of many brightly-written essa3 - s, her latest and most important work being "Memories of Fifty Years," which was (published last year.
