ST. JOHN'S DEBATING SOCIETY

St. John's Literary nnd Debating Society held its weekly meeting in the Willis Street classroom, on Friday ovening, there being a good attendance of members nntl visitors. The subject for debate wns: "That trial by jury should be abolished," and this popular subject brought forward ten speakers. The motion was moved by Mr. H. Newberry, seconded by Mr. D. Donglas, nnd opposed by Mr. D. Patterson, seconded by Sir. E. Shaw, but on being put to the meeting was defeated by a large majority. Dr. Gibb placed the five most efficient debaters in the following order:—Messrs. H. Newberry, 11. B. P.cid, 11. S. Watson, I). Douglas, and D. Patterson. The next meeting of tho society will be held on Thursday, May- 10, the subject for debate being: "That Hie airship will not prove n decisive factor in tho warfare of the future." JSIOO REWARD. CONFERENCE OF TEACHEKS. On Wednesday next (May 18) a conference of teachers from the various secondary schools in New Zealand will take place at the Girls' Hi»h School, commencing at 10.30 a.m. The Minister for Education (Hon. (J. Powlds), the Inspec-tor-General of Schools (Mr. G. Hogben), and tho Assistant Inspector-General (Dr. Anderson) will also bo present. Among the topics sot down on the agenda paper for discussion are the following notices of motion:— By Miss Marchant: (a) That it is desirable that there should bo instituted a new uniform system of class-naming in the secondary schools; (b) Thai Junior Education Board Scholarships aro not now necessary, and that tho monoy expended upon them should bo used as boarding allowances to be granted lo country children who have qualified for secondary education; (ft) That medical inspection of secondary schools is advisable, in order that in suspected cases of ill-health teachers may be able to toko action beforo advising the parents concerned; (d) That tho regulations with regard to admission to the teachers' training colleges should bo amended in the direction of affording facilities to senior pupils from tho secondary schools to enter for training as teachers in the high schools. By Mr. Morrelh (a) That the application of compulsory military training for cadets meets with tho approval of this conference; (b) That the Latin and French test cards for free-place candidates for the Junior Civil Service examination arc too hard; (c) That, this conference affirms the desirableness of greater continuity in tho standard of some of the papers set for tho matriculation examination. \ During the conference, Miss M'Lean (principal of tho Girls' High School), will read a paper on "History," Mr. Ring .(Christchurch) will contribute a paper on fhe subject of "French," and Mr. J. D. Mahon, of Auckland, a paper on "Secondary Education."
