REBUILDING OF HIGH SCHOOL. (Br TelejraDh.-SDCcial Correspondent.! Palmerston, May 15. At (ho Police Court yesterday, a man named Joseph Thompson was sentenced to 14 clays' imprisonment for stealing a case of kerosene from a local storekeeper's; yard. From tho evidence it appeared Thompson walked into tho yard, took away tho kerosene, and was trying to sell it at an auction room, where he waa arrested. Tlie Boy Scout movement is making much headway in this district, and the youth of both town and country are joining in large numbers. Chief Scoutmaster K. H. Whalley, of Palmerston, has been raised to the position of Lieutenant-Com-mander of tho Scouts in this district, and Scoutmaster G. Paltridge has been appointed Chief Scoutmaster. About seven o'clock iast night tho Palmerston firebells sounded an alarm for an outbreak in Messrs. Cook and Sons' box factory. Tho brigade, under Superintendent Warner, turned out smartly, but, when they got to the scene, it proved that tho alarm had been a false one, a passer-by having mistaken steam issuing from the boiler house for smoke.
Much gratification is expressed hero that the Government has made a grant sufficient to enable the recently-destroyed High School to be re-erected in brick. Both the insurance money and the Government grant (a sum of MWO) will bo available for the purpose. The rector of tho school, Mr. J. E. Vernon, left for Wellington yesterday with draft plana for tho "proposed buildings, which are to bo submitted to the Inspector-General for approval. These provide for future' extension without interfering with the original plans. The Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) presided over the annual meeting of the Manawatu Beautifying Society, when the following officers wore elected:—President, Mr. J. A. Xash; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Park and E. D. Hobcn; committee, Messrs. F. Mowlem, A. IC. Clauson, M A. Elliott, H. Canton, T. E. Hodder, J. C. Lane, and Captain Hewitt; secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. J. Tnskor. The chairman stated that he had received a gift of 500 cabbage trees. It was decided to plant Lintou Street and the road to the cemetery with trees on Arbor Day, and to act in conjunction with the borough council in observing that day.. Tho selection of trees was left to Mr. W. Park and Mr. P. Black, curator of the borough reserves. It was decided not to canvass tho town for subscriptions this year, as the public had contributed most liberally to the objects of the society last y.»ar. A letter was read from the' Government Lands Department statin* that 700 acr« on . Moimt Whariti had boon set aside as a scenic- reserve, at which murh gratification was expressed. Messrs. .T. Horrax, Karori, and. S. Johnston, Palmerston, havo been annointed judges for the Manawatu ICenna Club's exhibition, which is to bo held at the Mnnmratu A. and T. Association's snring show in November neit. The championship for pugs and rongh-coated callios will Iμ included in tho prize schedule. Special prizes have been donated by Messrs. TV. F. Durward, F. E, Watson, and A. J. Shnilcr.
