ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
HOW FAR IS THE SHIP RESPONSIBLE? A FALL DOWN A HATCH. , IBi Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, May It, Mr. H. T. Widdowson, the coroner, held an inquest this afternoon touching the death of Donald James Geddes, who, on Thursday, fell down a hatchway of the steamer Fifeshire, lying at PortChalmers, and died in the Dunedin Hospital early this morning. . . Albert Geddes, of Winton, said that deceased, his brother, was a stevedore, a steady man aged thirty-three, born at Hawthorne, Victoria, and came to the Dominion eight years ago. Ho was married, and had four children. On hearing of the accident witness came to town and remained with his brother-(with the exception of four hours) till he died. Dr. Falconer, resident medical officer,' stated that .Geddes was admitted to the hospital on May 12. He was then . unconscious, and was found to be suffering from a fracture of the left leg, fracture of several of the left ribs, a wound under tho chin, and injury to tho ■ jaw, mfbi symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage, this pointing to injury to tho base of tho brain. He remained unconscions, ond.died at half-past twelve this morning, the cause of death being the injuries described. The coroner stated that he would like to have a plan of the ship, and he wished to give the superintending stevedore an opportunity. of consulting the shipping company, to see if they wished to be represented before going any further. The inquest would therefore be adjourned till next Saturday. FOUND DEAD IN BED. (By Teleerarh—Press Association.) Dunedin, May U. Patrick Halligan, an old man, living alone in Walker Street, was found dead iu bed this morning. WOMAN SEVERELY BURNED. (By TelecraDh—Press Association.) Gisborne, May 14. Whilst boiling fat on a kitchen fire at' Patutahi yesterday, Miss Garry, sustained serious injuries. The fat overboiled and ignited her dress, which was immediately a mass of flames. She rushed outside and rolled on tho ground, and with assistance the flames were smothered. Miss Garry is suffering severely from burns and shock, and has been brought to tho hospital.
DEATH AT GEEYTOTVU. Carterton, Slay M. George Stevens, aged 37 years, married, died suddenly at Greytown this morning between '2 and 3 o'clock, the cause being heart failure, inquest will be held, as deceased was nntlor medical treatment.
FALL FROM A TEAMCAB. A porter named John B. Gunn, en*; ployed at the Shepherd's Arras Hotel, Tinnkori Koad, was admitted to 'thel Hospital on Saturday morning suffering from cuts on the head, the result of a fall when getting off a tramear. Gunn fell on his face, and besides the ents' on the head he had some, of his teeth knocked out.
