ROWING.
(Bt Merotot.) : The London "Sportsman" of March 30 says:— Ernest Barry's training for his raco on the Zambesi for the World's Championship with Dick Arnst was, during the past fortnight, slightly interrupted. Ho was sculling or rowing almost every day, but as the 'Varsity crews claimed so much attention and Tom Sullivan was engaged in advising the Oxford coxswain, Barry's work was a little irregular. Now, however, that Putney has' come back to its normal state Barry has resumed regular work in liis boat. . This started yesterday, when, accompanied by 'Mr. H. T. Blackstaffo, "Bessy Phelps, and Dan Cordery, who were in treble sculler, he wont down to Battersea, and afterwards sculled through to Hammersmith. Sullivan, wo regret to mention, was unnblo to row owing to an influenza cold, which compelled him to take to his bed on ■Wednesday last. He was out and about yesterday, and hopes to scull with Barry this afternoon at 3.30.
The lEnglish champion is making good progress. His sculling whilst the crews were in residence at Putney was closely scrutinised by the many famous rowing mou who attended tho riverside He has hardened his finish, and, in the opinion
of thoso who should know, is a more 'powerful sculler than when ho defeated George Towns. Hip blades are at work from tho moment they enter the watei until they leave it, ana, according to Mr. BlackstaiTe, who should bo in an excellent position to judgo, his paco has greatly improved. Barry,, when questioned by our representative yesterday, said that ho was in excellent health, and that he anticipated his training spins with pleasure. There was no monotony about the work, and he was perfectly satisfied 'with the aTTangements that had been made for him. After rowing yesterday he weighed list. B!b., which is loss than he has scaled for some time rjast. This, however, is accounted for by the irregularity of his work and the- recent close weather. Then, again, rowing with the crews in scratch weight? in the morning and sculling in tho afternoon is not exactly the ideal programme for a man training for the World's Championship, but now that the boat raco is over Barry will settle down again to his work. Tho satisfactory feature of the training is that he has not boon sick or sorry since lie started. He is now using; a sculling-boat that has been built for'him. by Bowers and Phelps. This is a quarter-inch broader than that ho used Tvhon ho opposed Geo. Towns for the "Sportsman" Cup. Barry stated that he was rwell pleased with the boat. Sims Bros, lave also a boat in hand for Barry, and; this will be finished by the end of next week.
