LACROSSE.

4 ONE OR TWO SUGGESTIONS. ■■ ' (Br "Centkk.") ■ As a mark of respeot for oiir.ikto King the competition games sot down for last 'Saturday )vero declared off, and will bo .played at the end of the first; round. The ordinary fixtures will, , therefore, be played to-day, when Capitol will meet Kclbume at the Basin Reserve, and Wellington '.will. contend with Both games should;prove;;of _\a highly interesting nature, and some, good- lacrosse is expected 'frbm encli 'club. The young'.players.have acquired considerable skill and' tactics from tho. practice :matchos, and will naturally giyo a good ■account of themselves . to-day. Both matches are to commence at 8 sharp, and . referees will see to it that all rules axe observed. , i

tho special committee appointed at the Inst meeting for tho purpose of revising and drawing lip playing laws to govern the contests for the cup met on Tuesday evening, when the rules of the Victorian Association wcro adopted with certain desirable alterations. These will be submitted to tho Auckland body, and it is ."loped that they will bo adopted turough-

out Now Zealand with vory_ few amendments. Competition matches will be played in four quarters of 20 minutes eacn. The ball should be from 4J to 4Joz. in weight, and homes niust not enter the goal crease—which is defzued as a space 12ft. by 6ft., extending 3ft. on tho sides of the goal, thence outwards for n distance of 6ft.—to check the keeper unless tho hall is within the-bounds of tho said crease. Tho use of tho .upper-cut check when ia pursuit of a player is also debarred, , and these are perhaps the main alterations" to tho rules under which wo havo 'hitherto been playing. -To-day the writer wishes to make a few suggestions for the consideration of the controlling body. Tho first is that in his opinion it is advisable to send two teams to play an exhibition game in one of tho larger inland towns at the earliest opportunity. If May 21—Empire Day—is not cancelled as a public holiday, it is perhaps not too late to plan a trip away tor that date. , On tho other hand,, June 3—which -will now bt Kiug"a; Birthdaymay he observed should Empire Day be cancelled. Failing both these, the scheme of playing exhibition games in other centres should be kept well in mind, as it affords, perhaps, the best means of establishing lacrosse in tho provinces. The second suggestion affects the sending of a representative team to Auckland. Tho writer is of' the opinion that the team should be chosen early, and re-' quested to go into training quarters, in close proximity to the Basin Unserve or Kelburne Park, for purposes of practising together in the mornings. A few men could perhaps be exempted from going into special quarters upon giving their guarantee, to attend every morning practice; while the rest of the selected representatives , could bo placed under the management of -the captain. In this way not only would the combination of play so requisite in a representative team be assured, but the standard of local play would be raised considerably . when the members returned to their ' clubs. The plan would invoke the association here in no additional expense wliatever, yet even if only eight men of the twelve went into quarteis the departure would bo justified by the improved etickwork and tactics. ■ .

According to "Point" in the "Referee," New South Wales aro scheduled to piny against Western Australia in South Australia, as the opening, game of the All States Carnival early in July. A's these States have never yet met, a good deal of speculation is rife as to the possible outcome of the game.
