DEAR'S RECORD FOR AUSTRALASIA.
'In Sorrow's Wake" is the title of an eloquent little book which constitutes the annual report of the Salvation Army social operations in Australia and New Zealand for 1009. The book is full of moving stories of the Army's rescue work and it contains statistics for tho year which speak eloquently of the dimensions and progress of the Army's institutions for the relief of suffering. The following figures for the Australasian work are quoted from an advnnce copy of tho report.—

Boys' Industrial Homes.-Number of homes, 8; total inmates, 521, of whom 243 were sent to situations and friends. . Rescue Work.—Number of homes 15inmates, December 31, 1908, 293; received from streets, Courts, and gaols, 587; sent to friends and situations, 375; unsatisfactory, 64.

Shelters for Men and Women.—Number of shelters, 14; lodgings given during year, (9.43G; meals supplied, 216,046. On the working account of the Social l'und for Australasia, the total to debit account is .£93,58? 14s. 9d.; total to credit account, ,£91,41.1 7s. 10d. ; and a net loss of .£2175 Cs. lid. is transferred to capital account.
, The Army claims that owing to, its system or placing those whom it relieves in a position where they shall earn eorac,tning towards their own support it onlv needs to ask the charitable public for 2s. out of every 20s. required for social work, This is borne out by the following table, showing tho sources of the income which supports the Army's seventy homes M,r?, stralasia:-Total wor king expenses, £93,591: income-direct donations .£3690, earned by industries, etc., £74,499, Government aid £10,877, granted from central funds £4525, total £93,591. . Putting it in another way, this means that each £100 required has been received from the following sources :-Direct donations £3 19s 4d., industries £79 10s. Bd., Government aid £11 125,, central funds.£l 18s
