FINANCES OF THE PAST TEAR. The railway figures for the year ended March fll last appear in last nighfs Gazette. The gross revenue amounted to .£3,249,790, and the gross expenditure to £2,169,474, leaving a ne,t balance of : The 1135 miles of railway in tho North Island yielded a net revenue of ,£546,567, or J34SI 11s. Id. per mile, as against a net rorenuo of ,£533,748, or ,£345 9s. Id. per mile, in tho case of the South. Tho net return per cent on capital was 4.19 in the case of the North and 3.37 per cent, in the case of tho South. The total revenue of all lines shows an increase of .£320,204 as compared with the preceding year, and the expenditure an increase of .£54,658, the ratio of working expenses to revenue falling from 72,19 to C6.7C per cent. This ratio is higher in the South than in tho North.
