PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY,

(From Our Special Correspondent.) . Palmerston, May 12. The local branch of the Farmers' Union, which was to havo held its annual dinner on May 17, has postponed the function until some date after tne funeral of tho late King. F. W. Klein, restaurant keeper, ■ has filed his schedule.

The officers of the various volunteer corps throughout the district have been notified to call parades for Sunday next. Tho local church parade will be held at All Sainfs Church.

A return match between the Palmerston and Kairanga Gun Clubs was fired on the old racecourse yesterday afternoon. The representatives of the country club again proved superior to their town opponents, winning bv 52 to 41. Mortenson and Garner matte possibles- for the winning teani; Bell and Bycroft were top for- , the-losers. Clay pigeons were used. 'Die visitors were entertained bv the ,-Palmerston Club. The lion, secretary, Mr. Walter Turner, had all tho arrangements complete, and, although the wea(her 'wns unpleasant, the gathering was enjoyable.

Another of Palmerston's oldest settlers has passed a way in the person of Mr. Luke Ward, who died at. the hospital to-day, after a painful illness, aged 70 years. Deceased r°sided in the Manawatu district for about 40 years, the last 20 of which he spent in Palmerston. He leaves a family of five sons and'three daughters. ■

Tho Terrace End corps of the Boy Scouts, under Scoutmaster Mr. Thomas Stagpoole, now numbers between 30 and 40 members. Archdeacon Harpor has accepted the position of chaplain to the corps, and Dr. Stowo that of medical officer.
