ACCESSION OATH
iS THERE TIME TO AMEND THE DECLARATION? A REGENCY BILL NEEDED. By TclceraDh-Prees AEsooiatlon-CopyrUbS. (Itec. May 12, 1.3 a.m.) London, May 11. "Tho Times" comments on the. request of the Roman Catholics, voiced by Mr. Wm. Eedmond (Nationalist M.P.), that the declaration made by the King in taking the Accession Oath shall he amended —by removing words-offensive to Roman Catholics—before the formal accession of King George V. ■ "Tho Times" says that, although" reasonable men of all Teligions are agreed that the wording of the accession declaration might be modified with advantage, it seems impossible that a Bill effecting specific changes could bo carried within tho time at Parliament's disposal, inasmuch as it requires unanimity.
The paper indicates that, besides the urgency of the Civil List, it is unnecessary (? necessary) to catty i Regency. Bill forthwith. The heir to the Throne being two years under age, provision must be made for the possibility of « minority. . ■ A BILL PROBABLE. TO OMIT OFFENSIVE WORDS.. (Ecc. May 12, 1.3 a.m.) London, May 11. The "Daily News" (liberal) states that the Government will introduce, a Bill to amend the King's declaration by omitting the words "superstitious and ' idolatrous" and substituting "contrary to. my . belief." ■ -■. .
[The Accession Oath, which was taken by King Edward, states that:- , !,, Edward, do solemnly ... ueclare that 1 do believe that in the Sacrainent of the Lord's Supper there is not any transubstantintion of the elements of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. . . . and that the invocation or adoration of the Virgin Mary or any other saint, and the sacrifice of the Mass,, a* they are now used in the Churchof Kome, are superstitious and idolatrous."]
