Melbourne, May 11. The Arbitration Court.has given its award in connection with, the Federal Marino Stewards' and Pantrymen's Association of-Australasia for increased rates of pay and a readjustment of hours. Tho award fixes the pay of second stewards at'.£7 10s. a month; that of forecabin stewards and pantrymen at M 10s,; chief saloon steward, JEO;' stewards of th.e first grade (including saloon waiters, bedroom and smokcroom stewards, and- each adult in tho stewards'- department liot elsewhere specifically provided for), nlso barmen and storekeepers, 1% 10s.; second grade' stewards range from .£2 (where under 17 years of age) to (where over 21); watchmen, .£7 on passenger.and JCIO on cargo or collier vessels.
The award, which operates for five years, is far below tho' demands. The president of tho C-Anrt explained that this was due to tho fact that "tips" and perquisites received by'stewards had been taken into consideratipn. The Court had endeavoured to secure, an adequate income for employees, but it did not matter whether it came wholly from employers or in part from the passengers.
Provision is made lor holiday and overtime payments.
