EXPRESSIONS OP SORROW AND. 'LOYALTY. Yesterday being the regular date for a meeting of the Petone Borough Council, all the councillors took their places at the. table at the usual hour in the evening. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) said that since the last meeting of tho council news had been received of the death of his Majesty King Edward YII. Ho' was also in receipt of a telegram from the Prime Minister relatiye to the pro-, oed'ure to bo followed in connection, with mourning ceremonials. Tho Mayor tiien moved a resolution, which, with a subsequent addition, road as follows: —■ "That. tliis_ council adjourn until. Monday evening next, as a mark of kspect to the memory of the late ! King Edward YH of Great Britain and Ireland and Emperor of India, and that a letter be sent

through tho proper authorities expressing -our sympathy with Queen / Alexandra in. the loss she has sustained, 'and our unlimited loyalty to the Throne." ."I am not given onoocasions of this kind," oontinued the Mayor, "to mako Tise'of many words. I, however, wish to . say that I heartily join my voioa with those who have eulogised our late King Edward VII. The fierce 'Ugh." that beats upon the throne has revealed a man; of strong humanitarian sympathies.
