A "FRIEND OF THE ROMAN CATHOLICS."
THE POPE AND THE CHIEF RABBI. i London, May 8. ,| His Holiness the Pope and the Papal , Secretary (Cardinal Merry del Val) havo . \! condoled with King George. • j Archbishop Bourne, Roman Catholid < Archbishop of Westminster, has ordered a week's prayer for the Royal Family j and for tho Empire. . I The Rev. Father Bernard Vaughaa (a personal friend of King Edward, and a critic of the sins of "Smart Society") says that to the man in tho-street, his Majesty was tho best-known, best loved, \ and best trusted man in the country. He had been a genuino friend to the Roman Catholics, and could settle in- - ternational troubles over the breakfast table. -
The Jewish Chief Rabbi, ■ Dr. ( Adler, in a sermon in London, said no section of tho Empire had been more stirred by' tho King's death than tho Jewish community. All had deeply admired liis Majesty's gracious courtesy, the unfailing tact, and tho sleepless solicitudo for the great cause of tho world's peace. _ . To the Jews, added the Chief Rabbi, tho King had become a representative of King Cyrus, because of his hate of hate, scorn of scorn, and absolute freedom from racial or sectarian prejudice.
[Cyrus the Persian is regarded in Isaiah 40-13 as specially destined by . Jehovah (Jahweh)- to redeem Israel and execute divine judgmont upon Babylon, to set free tho captives, aud restore Jerusalem and its Temple. "Tho Career of Cyrus," writes Dr. C. H. \\. Johns, "so impressed tho popular imagination that the classical writers Morn his st-ory with a variety of legendary inoidciits for. which ho confirmation can be produced. The policy which Cyrus pursued towards tho Jews is variously estimated, but all accounts agree in stating that tho restoration of the Tcmplo was started by him, and in claiming him as a worshipper of Jahweh ."]
