(By TeloeraDh.— Special OorresnonacHi.i « —— - • CARTERTON. Tho annual meeting of the shareholders of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society was held on Friday evening. The report and balance-sheet, previously published, were read and adopted. Messrs. J. Baillie, J. Moncrieff, and W. T. Masson tvere reelected to tho directorate, and Mr. L. H. Smart was re-elected shareholders' auditor. A troop of Boy Scouts is being formed at Dalefield, with Mr. Gordon as scoutmaster. Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Oddfellows have decided to hold a "social" and dance on Thursday, July 7, to celebrate tho centenary of the Order. A strong Ladies' Committee has been appointed, and Messrs. L. H. Smart and C. J. De Lacev have been appointed joint secretaries for tho function. A brauch of the Church of England Men's Socioty is to be formed here. Support sufficient to establish same has been promised, and arrangements will shortly be made for opening the branch. A telegraphic chess match between the Masterton Chess Club-and Wairarapa players is to take place on May GREYTOWN. . A special meeting of the South WaiTarapa Boy Scouts was held on Friday evening last. The chief item was to bid good-bye to Corporal Allan Day, who is leaving Greytdwn to take up a position. as a cadet on a station. Several friends, Rev. Mr. Page (chaplain), and Mr. M. Maxton (District Secrotary), 'wore also present. On the request of Chief-Scoutmaster Shanley, the Rev. Mr. Page presented the guest of the ovening with a book, "The Life of Nelson," as a small token of the esteem in which he was held by his comrades. After the boys had sung "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," Corporal Day suitably responded. Mr. William Barton has accepted the position of District Commander South Wairarapa Boy Scouts, and he has- appointed Mr. Mark Maxton as district secretary. This district extends from Carterton to Martinborough, including Greytown and Featherston. The Girls' Peace . Scouts have been very ■ fortunate in securing tho services of Miss Monckton, of Featherston, as scoutmistress. Miss Monckton • • will I shortly appoint her assistants. . WOODVILLE. The funeral of the late Airs. G. Rabone, took place on Sunday. Mrs. Rabone spent a number of years in Woodville in the early days of settlement, and would be well known amongst those ol the settlers who came here to open up the country. In later years tne family removed to Wanganui. 'Mrs. Rabone, however, took ill while staying at Dahnevirke, and died there on Friday morning. , , J Tho Rev. Mr. Ginger has so far improved in health as to permit of his returning home here from Wellington. OTAKI. The monthly meeting of the Otaki Road Board was held on Saturday afternoon, Warden Tompsitt presiding. Commont .was general on the stato 'of the roads, an<j the bad lighting of Wairenga Road, the chief thoroughfare in tho' town. It was decided that- three lamps were necessary, and it was also resolved to call tenders, .the previous prico per -lamp - , viz., £4 125., being considered too high.- It was decided to proceed with the metalling as soon as possible. Tho championship football matches commenced on Saturday, whon the local team was defeated by. Manakau by 9 points to nil. Levin defeated Shannon by 6 points to nil. Skating is to commence hero on Friday next, when a rink will open in the Town Hail. There is at present a movement on foot to ascertain which will bo' most beneficial for. street lamps—acetylene or- kerosene.
