'Much curiosity exists (says a Greymouth correspondent) as to the vacancy in the Legislative- Council created by tlio death of the Hon. James Holmes, of Hokitika. It is stated in circles which are usually well informed that tho nominee will in all likelihood be a resident of Greymouth. This idea is based on the assertion that, as tho Hon. James Marshall non- lives in the Wcstland constituency, he will ho regarded as tho representative of that electorate. .Under the circumstances, Groy is without a member of the "Upper House, and it is presumed that a local resident will bo appointed to fill the vacancy.
