KIRKCALDIE '& STAINS, Lt<J. 'THE KING IS DEAD, A NATION MOURNS. The death of King Edward VII came upon us with startling suddenness. The people of Wellington were staggered with the intelligence on Saturday, and immediately there was manifested a feeling of profound sorrow. Flags Were half-masted, shops closed, entertainments postponed, and practically all sports'were suspended. There is no doubt but that King Edward won the admiration of the people of New Zealand as King, as man, and as a sport. This much was evident by the scraps of conversation to be heard everywhere. New Zealand will mourn the loss of Edward the Peacemaker, and much genuine sympathy will be felt for the widowed Queen' Alexandra.
