Nordon, of Christchureh, president of the New Zealand Hockey Association, has received a cablegram from the International Board of Control confirming the Press. Association message that it is. impracticable to send an official team representing England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales to tour New Zealand. The Board of Control consists of representatives ,of the four countries, and as Sir. Nordon had during his recent trip Homo pointed out that it was useless to send any but r ' representative team, the cablo indicates that such a team was not available. Mr. Nordon expressed his keen disappointment at the falling through of the project, but stated that the greni stumbling-block was the fact that tlio members of the team would have had to pay their own passage moneys. BOXING. JOHNSON-JEFFRIES DISPUTE. By Teleerajh—Prosa Association—Copyright London, ~ay 5. It .'is reported that a deadlock has occurred in connection with the JohnsonJeffries fight, each pugilist, objecting to the other's nomination of a referee.
WRESTLING. SCOTT AND A PAHIATUA MAN. (Bj TolcEraDh—fioecial UorrcsDondtmt.l Palmcrston North, May 6. It is quite probable that a wrestling match in catcli-as-catch-cau > stylo will shortly be arranged between R. J. Scott, of Stratford, and Gordon Smith, of I'ahiatua, for apurse which is being arranged by .the Manawatu Caledonian Society. Both men have expressed their willingness to compete. The idea lias arisen, out of the contest which took place at the Caledonian Society's gathering on last Easter Monday, when Smith was awarded the prize on points. GARDINER TO MEET ROBERTSON. After protracted ■ negotiations, arhave just been completed for a wrestling contest between Louis Robertson, of - Stratford, and Joo Gardiner, of Wellington. As most followers of wrestling are aware, the contestants are generally recognised to bo easily the, best exponents of the art in. their class in tho Dominion.. One of the principal "bones of contention" between the pair in tho past has been the limit for. tho light-weight championship. Gardiner has all along insisted that the maximum should be 10st., whilst Robertson has claimed that it should be several pounds higher. According to custom, the.general rule in Now Zealand hitherto appears to have been to make it lOst. If Robertson can get down to this weight—which, he says he can—the difficulty will be settled as to which is entitled to hold the championship honours until beaten. It may be explained that the title is claimed by Gardiner by virtue of victory without a fall having been .recorded against him in the forty-three oontests in which he has been engaged whilst in the Dominion. Rohertson also has been successful, in the matches which he has had against light-weights, but Gardiner disputes hi; right to the title on account of the fact that on no occasion has he weighed lOst., or under. . The forthcoming contest, which will take place* at Stratford on Thursday, is bound to arouse considerable interest in wrestling circles, as opinions widely differ. as to which is .the better .exponent. It is understood that 'the stake will be £25 aside, but that point is to be settled, in a day or two. <. LAWN TENNIS ! DAVIS CUP ARRANGEMENTS. (By Teleeranh—Press. Association.! Christchurch, May 6. •At a meeting of tlio Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association to-night, the following resolutions were passed:— ''That in'tho opinion of this association the fact that the Management Committee has taken upon itself to advise the Australasian Association as to where in New Zealand the Davis Cup should be played this year, is contrary alike to the spirit and letter of the New Zealand -Association's rules, as in such rules it is provided that only administrative details should bo decided by the Management Committee." "In view of the fact that it is admitted by the .Management Committee to be within the control of the Davis Cup Committee of tho Australasian Association (as evidenced by the Manage- • ment Committee's recommendation in favour of' Wellington), this association demands to know why it was not made cognisant of the fact, as its application was in by February 1." • A deputation was appointed to wait on the '.council at its nest meeting t<j lay the. whole matter before it. CRICKET. ; CRAWFORD^AND SURREY. •: Bj TelecraDh-ProBS Association—CoDirlrbt. (Rec. May 6, 9.10 p ; m.) London, May 6. The Rev. Mr. Crawford, at the annual meeting of the Surrey 'Cricket Club, submitted a motion to rescind the resolution that his son (Mr. J. N. Crawford) .be not asked to again play for Surrey. , Lord Alvoratono, presiding, replied that every-member-of tho. oommittee would rejoice at the rescissors of the resolution. if Mr. J. N. Crawford had apologised, but no word of apology had been received. The matter 'dropped. ' [Mr. J. N. Crawford had a dispute with tho Surrey committee as .to. the selection of the comity team. He subsequently accepted a position in Ade- ■ laide on.the teaching staff of St. Peter's College, and played for South Australia.] ■ '
