ENCUMBRANCES: NO ROOM!
There has been much talk of late about "encumbrances" and married couples, aiid the difficulty that these unfortunate people experience in getting employment at times. Tanners, especially the larger ones, have heard a great. many unpleasant .things said about themselves in consequence, but then they probably have become used to that kind of thing. . Over and over again, they have been told that they are land monopolists, that they do' not share their just burden in regard to the State, and so on, 60 probably, a litUo : more or less abuse will not trouble them. It is rather interesting, however, to learn that there are other people besides farmers who do their best to make things unpleasant for the people who have children. The following incident is only ono of many that have happened to other people in the same plight. ■ A short time ago a lady with her husband and two children, one a collego boy of eleven years, . and the other a child of nineteen months old, arrived in Wanganui about half-past eight one evening. They went to a family hotel, and the husband went to the office, to secure accommodation. Thero were two rooms vacant (he was told), and they were just on the point of being engagod when the girl caught sight of the lady with tlio-baby in her arms. "Oh! You have a baby with you. I'm afraid we have no rooms to spare." With that she con-, forred with, the proprietor, who at that moment appeared upon the scene, and the announcement was confirmed, in spite of what had been said previously. True, they were directed to another hotel, but that was full up, and they had to go still further afield. Weary, with a, long train journey, unablo for somo time to get suitable accommodation, and stran- ; gei'S to the town, it was hardly" surprising that they thought Now Zealand anything but "God's Own Country." Strange anomaly. A country that assists emigrants to come into the country, but yet I makes things so unpleasant for the nativeborn!
