LACROSSE.

(Bt "Centbe.")

; Last Saturday's games proved diverting ' in view of the unexpected defeats of [ Wellington by Columbia, and Capitolby i Kelburne. Ths first-named match looked like a ' very easy win for Columbia at the com- ' mencement, for, with the arrival of , half-time, they had notched no less than ■ six goals to Wellington's one. Grant ; figured most prominently in Columbia's attack, but was Veil supported by Leydon, Casey,- aud Morgan. On resuming, however, the Wellington attack simply turned the tables op their opponents, and scored frequently until the conclusion, of tho game, which Columbia just succeeded in holding by tho narrow margin of ono point, the final score being I 8 to 7. Columbia were without the services of Ifarna and MuuCarthy, whilst Wellington were minus Itonoulf and Linnlot. j In defence, Columbia' wore particularly - sound, during the first spell, but, on changing ends, permitted the Wellington homes to get m ou tho goalkeeper. Point should be careful-always in this regard, but the man in this position on Saturduy was riot so much at fault pa were cover-point and third man, who tailed to cut-oil tho men running in.. : Carver, at' centre, for Wellington, biiowed great speed, and did excellent scrvico for his side, while Eobinson was u treat to watch in the matter of stickwork. Tho second match between Kelburno und Capitol was'not only a well-contested game, but a really first-class exhibition in every way. Kelburno took the game iii'hand spiritedly from the, first faceoff, and had soon notched a point. This no doubt gave thorn great heart to keep their doughty opponents on the move, with, the result they came away, with .a meritorioun win of 3 to nil. If. would be difficult to say in what department they ■ excelled', but Uib win might safely bo attributed to the defence. Seely, who played third man, succeeded n. looking alter Borrodale) who is, perhaps, tho most dangerous third home in the Dominion, and Seel/n work on the day should at least attract the selector's notice for a place in the rcprescnlntui. team. . 11 is, h-wever, too early in tho liny to say whether ho will qualify for representative, honours. l'roud; Jordan, and Nenlo also showed ,- excellent form in defending the Kclburns> goal, but Millar and MocNamarn nave not yet- struck top form. Webb, at centre for the same side, played a sterling game, and, though receiving due praise on the one hand, he must also accept tho writer's assurance inn) his piny would ho vastly improved if ho would refrain from trying to "beat" even one man. '

Pledger—Kolburne's third home—did excellent scrvic... He is a player full of vim awl go. and his efforts in attack were supported by the first and Becond homes—Loughnane and Meyer.

On the other side, Moran and King must be commended for good work—thoy had a difficult pair to handle, but met resourcefulness in attack with sterling (Jefoncui whilst Montgomery it goal 6toppetl many hard shots. At centre, Rankin bore perhaps tha. brunt of the attack, and a fair share of tho defence, whilst Forbes, in thee vanguard, shows marked improvement. (Jlouston and his colleague, at secondhome, played well, but were in turn well marked, which, to some extent, prevented the casual onlooker from appreciating their good'work. "Point," in the Sydney "Referee,' re* ports that Surrey won the Southern Counties Lacrosso Championship after a. well-contested final with Middlesex, by. l 6 goals to 3. The N.S.W.L.A. is introducing tho game into the public schools,' several ex-players in the: teachers' ranks offering their services as coaches. Victorian lacrosso is improving ' both in, following and standard of play, 45, teams in all being .registered with the( association. In the last contest with thei South Australians the Victorians snc-i| ceeded in winning from the • once vincible state by 9 t0.5.
