ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Thomas Jones, aged eighty-three, was, drowned this moriiing at Port Chalmers.' Deceased, who resided' with his son, left home early this morning, and went' down to the'docks for the purpose of' borrowing a small screwjack. : As it was usual for him to go for early walks his absence from home • was. not commented on. About nine o'clock, however, a man noticed a hat and:a walk- ' ing stick lying on the wharf on the south side of-the entrance to the old dock, and subsequently deceased was found floating dead in tie water near the outlet from the dock pumps. ' Mr. Widdowsoh' held an inquest this afternoon, ■ when the evidence showed' that, as the'result of an accident to his nead, deceased was subject to dizziness when stooping, down. A verdict was .returned to the effect , that death was due to asphyxiation 'from: drowning. ( .body recovered; Napier, May 6. . The body of George Duncan who &as swept off the breakwater during the recent storm, was recovered to-day. 'A youth named Robert Ready,, 16 years of age, residing at Scatoun, had his. left hand caught in a planing machine yesterday at Messrs. Meyer aiid Ulingworth's factory, Taranaki Street. Two of the fingers were cut off, and the hand was lacerated. Ready was taken to the hospital for treatment. The hospital authorities report that ' Mrs. Guthrie, who was run over by a taxicab in Manners Street on Saturday night last, and Mr.' Cargill, who Inet i with a railway , accident, are making good progress towards recovery. The " footballer M. Olliver, who was injured last Saturday, is also doing well.
