IVtorn Our Guccial Corrcspondenta.J * MASTERTON. The first monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital ami Charitable Aid Board was held this week. Present: Messrs. E. G. Eton (chairman), W. Fisher, H. Cornelius. A. Moss, J. Colqulioun, K. G. Welch, H. K. Beethain, S. ! Bolton, D. Crewe, J. W. Hurray, F. W. H. Rummer, A. J. Speedy, Ci.. 1". Ben- ; m*t. li. D. M'Lcod, and H. Jl-jr;is'> l. There were fourteen applicants for the ■ position of secretary, and Mr. N. D. i Bunting was elected to the position. The following estimates for the year were approved, and a. levy ordered to be struck: Charitable aid, .£lßl7 10s. Hospitals— Masterton <£2855, Pahiatua <£1430, South Wairarapa <£1255 10s.. An estimate of £3500 (less <£2286 in hand) for a new brick addition to Greytown Hospital was approved, and a committee was set up to meet Dr. Valintine. FEUDING. The ,Feilding A. and P, Association has received a request from Mr. G. De S. Baylis, North Island Instructor in the Fields and Experiment Farms Division of the Agricultural Department, for volunteers to take a number of new varieties of various cereals which he is desirous of testing in the various districts of the North Island. 1 These varieties are all imported, and only small quantities are at his disposal. The experiment should meet with a ready response here. The Halcombe School will not be closed next week, but will take its holidays during tho Palmerston Winter Show week with the other schools. Mr. Fred. Pirani has been nominated for the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of. Councillor Goodbchere. Owing .to an outbreak of typhoid at the Tokorangi Maori pa, tho Tokorangi School has been #losed this week. One Maori boy attending the school died on Monday from an attack of the ailment. Mr. Geary> of Wellington, Feilding's newly-appointed town clerk, will take up his duties on June 1. At tho request of the Borough Council tho Holiday Association has decided to recommend Feilding shopkeepers to close from 10 a.m. to noon on the occasion of the visit of Lord Plunket next Saturday week. The association has also decided to recommend retailers to' closo all day on May 24 (Empire Day), but to keep open on June 3 (Prince of Wales' Birthday), following the usual custom. In the first round of the Friendly Societies' card tournament, the' Oddfellows beat the Foresters by 22 to 18. Shortly after nine o'clock on Monday evening a fire was discovered in tho seed room of Messrs. Hodder and Tolley's mill in Kimbolton Road, but a bucket brigade soon extinguished the ilanies. Mr. W. Mills, the well-known pioneer settler of Cheltenham, has sold his farm to Mr. Cyril Dermer, of Feilding. Mr. Mills, who took up the land thirty-three .years ago. has recently settled in the Hawke's Bay district. Mr. Dermer intends to go in more extensively than ever for breeding stud Jerseys. OTAKI. A "send-off" was accorded Messrs. Mil-, denhall and Ernest and George Brown, at Waikanae on Monday night, the first-named having decided to leave for Porirua, while the Messrs. Brown intend taking a trip to Sydney. The tablet porter at Manakau was struck by a mail bag thrown from a passing traiu on Tuesday, and knocked over. No injury reas done, but it is understood that the matter will be reported. ' . The local Druids held a "social" on Tuesdav evening, the hall being packed. Dancing, singing, etc., combined to make a very pleasant evening. This 19 tho first of a series which is to be held during the coming winter. A fair amount of interest was evidenced in tho Road-Board election held on »ednesday, arid the fact that tlio new candidates were- mainly supported seems to in-, dicate that a change was desired. Ihe following lave been declared elected:D. ,Meads, ; Tompsitt. A. W. Skcrmnn, J. D. Howell, and F. C. Jones. Hockev championship fixtures, began on Wednesday, the two local teams meeting here. Both had strong combinations, and hard and fast play was shown. The passing, however, was mostly poor, and individual play was the main feature. Ihe forwards on. both sides lost many chances by over-eagerness, and at times by selfishness. Raliui were eventually, returned winners by two goals to one. Miy-Penn was referee. < " On Wednesday a Native girl was knocked down by a motor-car, but fortunately escaped uninjured. . Tho local footballers are' in a quandary as to where they will secure a ground for this season, tlio present recreation ground being under the plough for levelling purposes. Two or three places have been viewed, bnt aro either'unsuitable or unobtainable. The death occurred at Wellington on Wednesday of Mr. W. J. Mason, wlio was a popular' resident hero for many years. The grandstand for the Otaki Maori Racing Club has assumed definite shape, and the workmen liave been making tho most of the recent fine weather. Milk supplies at the local creameries are gradually decreasing, and in a few days some of the smaller creameries will receive only on alternate days.' Mr. Freeman, who has been connected with the local creamery, has severed his connection with it, and contemplates .returning to Wellington. EKETAHUNA. U the annual meeting of tho Ekctahuna Branch of the Farmers' Union the following officers were elected for the ensuing year-.—President, Mr. H. W. Bridge; "vice-president, .Mr. B. Morris; secretary, Mr. R. J. M'Lean; treasurer, Mr. A.. Small; auditor, Mr. F. Wise; executive committee, Messrs. T. Moss, G. H. Hickman, ,F. C. Turner, F. Dowsett, E. Tomlinson. A. Small, J. Scott, Scharenweber. T. F. Calton, and A. Pryde. It was considered by those present that the branch had so far justified its existence, and, to further popularise the organisation, it was decided to make an effort in the direction of obtaining the services of expert breedors of sheep and cattle to give addresses, and thus, by demonstration, to assist farmers in forming a good working conception as to what is the correct sire to purchase for. improving flocks and herds. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Herbert, of Eketahuna, leave by the Ophir on May 20, oil a visit to the Old Country. Quite a gloom was cast over tho town nil "receipt of the news of tlio death at Marton of Mrs. S. T. Norton, sister of the Mayor (Mr. E. Page) and Mr. T. M. Pago, of this town. Deceased resided for a number of years' in Eketahunn, and was extremely popular. The Eketahuna Branch of the Farmers' Union is forwarding the following remit to the Provincial Conference,, to be held at Marton"That it vrould be a mistake to make capital values of laud liable to taxation until the whole system of taxing the accumulated wealth of the community is altered to a tax on capital value." A conference of chairmen of school committees is to.be held in' Eketahuna during the month to discuss the question of establishing a District High School in Eketahuna. Mr. H. W. Bridge will represent the Eketahuna Branch of iliu Farmers' Union at the' Provincial Conference. The Eketahuna Boxing Association opened its season on Monday evening, when there was a large attendance, including representatives of the Masterton Association, and much enthusiasm was shown. The association has secured the services of Professor Richardson as instructor. CARTERTON. Tho annual parish meeting of St. : Mark's Church was held on Tuesday ,i evening, tlio Rev. li. It is tho only team entered from Carterton. SHANNON, The annual meeting of tho Shannon branch of the Farmers' Union was held on Saturday, when Sir. C. B. Robinson presided. The balance-sheet, which was adopted, showed a credit balance of «£2 lis. 2d. Mr. F. W. Venn was again appointed delegate for the conference of the .union, which is to be held at Marton on May 21. The following office-bearers were elected:—Chairman, Mr. C. B. Robinson; vice-chairman, Mr. A. Saunders; secretary, Mr. E. J. Judd; auditor, Mr. J. W. Bntchelar; committee, Messrs. J. Mitchell, G. N. Stephenson, E. Law, J. Oag, J. Cameron, J. W. Venn, and Ryman. Members of the Shannon Debating Society assembled in full' force on Tuesday night, when all those who had anything in the nature of curios produced them and gave a short acoouut of the history of each. Amongst the many interesting articles forthcoming were a portion of a Boer flag captured at Paardeberg(Mr. W. Murdoch), Maori paddle discovered in Makerua Swamp about 7 feet under the surface (Mr. Tilling), carved stock whip handle (Miss Asquith), book of tram tickets (Mr. Hensman), model non-spilling jug. (Mrs. Hensman), collection of birds' eggs and fibre from cabbage tree, said to be stronger than phormium fibre (Mr. A. Saunders), copies of London "Times" containing news of Nelson's death and a description of the battle of Trafalgar (Mr. W. Clayton), bayonet taken from Turk at Crimean War (Mr. Exall), American Indian mocassins (Mr. W. H. Gunning), barrel of rifle' found at Massacre Hill, Marlborough (Mr. E. Law). Mr. Oag was the proprietor of a miniature museum containing a number of interesting odds and ends. The Bowling Club had decided to hold its "social" on May 27. Lady members are to be admitted next season. The green is to be top-dressed during the winter. WOODVILLE. Results of the Woodvill© Club's Wednesday football matches were as follows:—Wood villo Seniors won their match against Excelsior, but the Juniors lost to the High School boys of Dannevirke by one point, while the third fifteen's matcn ended in a draw. Two of the above matches were played at Dannevirke, but the High School boys and Juniors met on tho Recreation Ground here. The former team showed.fair combination, and played a rather good passing game. They will apparently be a team that will give a good aceount of themselves throughout tho competition. The local juniors are possessed of some good players, but the old trouble of selfishness spoils their play. With the assistance of a good conch they could be made a very fast and effective team. A special meeting of the Woodville Borough Council was held, week, Air. Burnett occupying the chair until his Worship, Mr. M'lvibbin, was installed. On the recommendation of the gas manager, a two-inch pipe is to be laid in Ormond Street. This will complete the circuit as far as tho mains in the town portion of the borough are. concerned. Tho drainage scheme was again brought up. but consideration was postponed in order to ascertain if arrangements could not be made to secure a 10 per cent, extension on loan raised if necessary.
