CITY COUNCIL.
THE COMMITTEE BUSINESS,
The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last evening, and the newly-elected Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) took his seat for the first time. There were present: Councillors Luke. Smith, Cohen, Ballinger, Frost, Trevor, AtkinBon, Devine, Fitzgerald, Carmichael, Hindniarsli., il'Laren, Fletcher, and Morrah. FINANCE. The Finance and Property Committee recommended: (1) That the Wellington City Military Band he informed that their offer to give band performances will be considered when, the new schedule is being prepared. (2) That the -first quarter's levy, amounting to ,£2195 Ms. 6d., of the annual contribution to the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board, be paid. (3) That Mr. E. Tonks be informed, in reply to his application for the erection of a retaining wall at the corner of Thompson and Webb Streets, that he will be permitted to remove the earth on the roadway, if he builds the wall himself. (4) That in those portions of Melrose, Wadestown, and Northland to which drainage will not extend for some considerable period, and which are subject to the special rate for security on the drainage loan, the further charge for sanitary service be not made, but in no such case shall the minimum amount to be paid for sanitation, inclusivo of the rate, be less than the annual eanitary charge per house, namely, 14s. 2d. (5) That the Catholic Presbytery be offered Sections 7 and 2 as one lot, and Section 7 separately, of the King Street' property as adjoining owners at the City Valuer's valuation. That accounts amounting to .£17,974 10s. Gd. be passed for payment. The report was adopted, with the exception of the clause relating to the offering of sections to the Catholic Presbytery, which clause. was referred back to the Finance Committee.
TRAMWAYS. The Power' Stations anil Tramwaja Committee recommended: (1) That the application of the Harbour Board for an extension of the electric power, supply to their new shed at, Waterloo Quav be granted. (2) That Messrs. J. W.:AVallace and Co. bo not charged any penalty for non-completion of their contract for sleepers Tor the Lyall Bay tramway within the contract time, as they were unable to ship the material owing to tbe coal strike; but that the extra amount incurred in purchasing the sleepers loc-, ally, cartage, etc., be deducted from the contract price, tho amount being .£5 18s. Zα: The report was adopted.
ABATTOIES. The Abattoirs Committee recommended that the request of tho butchers who kill their stock at the abattoirs to be paid the receipts from the sale of offal and runners, quarterly, instead of yearly, bo acceded to, and that the by-law |be amended accordingly. .The report was adopted.
BATHS AND RESERVES. Tho Baths and City Reserves Committee recommended: (1) That notico be served on tho Wellington College Governor to eradicate the gorse on their reserve adjoining tho Town Bolt; (2) that tho resignation of the custodian of tho Thorndon Baths (Mr. Firth) bo accepted, and that he be granted one month's leavo of absence; (3) that applications be invited from employees of the council for the position of custodian, and that, pending the appointment being made, the committee bo authorised to temporarily. fill the position. The committee reported that the Basin Reserve would be opened for winter games torn to-morrow. . Tho report was adopted 1 . . BY-LAWS, FIRE BRIGADE, LIGHTING. The By-Laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee recommended: That seven lamps- be., erected at Maranui, the positions"'txf'be decided b.y.the electrical engineer; (2) that the owners of Little Buller Street be called upon to repair tho street, and to construct a crossing over the,footpath,-, with , a bridge box in lugestre Street; (3) that tho application of Sir. J. S. Swan, on lichalf of the Hon. G. Fowlds, for permission to erect a verandah at Herbert Street, be not granted, but that he be allowed to return the verandah to bo erected in Manners Street to the' doorway from Herbert Sh-eet; (1) that tho application of Mr. J. S. Swan, on behalf of Mr. Martin Kennedy, for the conspnt of the council to the formation of o, right-of-way, 18ft. wide from King Street, be granted, on tho following conditions:— (a) That tho way be not used for the purpose of giving frontages to any dwellinghouse>i, (b) that tho way be properly formed, graded, and paved with tarred macadam to the satisfaction of the City Engineer, (c) that provision be made for stormwater drainage and sewerage- of the buildings erected along the way, (d) that gates be erected at the entrance of the way, and kept closed at night, (e) that one light be provided at the way, (f) that tho way be maintained in good repair and kept clean at the expense of the owner; (5) that the annual report of the superintendent of tho fire brigade be printed and circulated to the council.
The committee reported: (1) That they had furrier considered the question of the charge made for the lighting of the ways nt Claremont in perpetuity, and recommended that tho original snm of .£228 fixed bo adhered to; (2) that they had again considered the application of Messrs. Easson, Ltd., for permits to erect dwellings at Ross Street, South Kilbirnie, and recommended that the permits' be granted, on the conditions imposod by the City Engineer; and als6 that the company give an undertaking to fill up the sections outside the hoiises if, and when, required by the City ' Engineer, and to his satisfaction. The stormwater drainage was now being provided, and no water would lie on the land. The report was adopted. '
