Jackson made a presentation from . the staff and scholars to Miss E. von Keista- 1 berg, who has been appointed assistant at the Levin School. In mating the presentation Mr. Jackson referred to the fact that Miss Keisenberg had been associated lvitli the school from the_ time when, as a pupil, she was in the infant classes. , ■ Mr. W. Parker, of this town, will leave the Dominion on Friday on a trip to tha Old Country. On Monday evening he was entertained by a number of friends at a social evening,-during which he was presented by the members of the disbanded W.F.C.A. hockey team with a case of silver-mounted pipes, suitably inscribed. , Keen interest is i being taken in tfcs small bird competition which is being conducted under the auspices of t&» Mastcrton Homing Pigeon Club, and for. which Mr. Lett has donated a gold. medal. ' There are still two more races to be flown and the aggregate to date is: J. Bradbury and W. Drake, 10 points; W. Hoar and H. Hilton, 8; A. Miller,- 7. At the Kia Ora Tea Rooms yesterday afternoon the. Rev. Dr. Henry and Mr. . C. A. Potts were entertained at luncheon by the members of the local branch of the No-License League.. A meeting of tho newly-formed Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society was held on Monday evening, Mr. J. G. Cooper presiding. Mr. G. E. Sykes was elected "Premier" of the "Cabinet." Appointments were as follow.—Messrs. J. R. Cole (Bay of Islands), D. Hebenton (Wairarapa), 0. Pragnell (Wellington North), J. Hunter (Waipawa), H. M. Boddington (Bruce), H. Evans (Hawke's Bay). Messrs. J. Eue, E. Pragnell, and Flannagan were elected a Parliamentary Committee. It was. resolved to open "Parliament" on . Monday next, and also ; to ask Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby -to deliver an address on Parliamentary "procedure on that evening. GREYTOWN. . The funeral of the late Mr. T. Kemp* ton took, place on Monday. The was a large one, and the following were tiie pall-bearera:—Messrs. .H. Mori&cm, W. C. Buchanan, M.P., A. Smith, and J, Hodder. The service at the grave was conducted by the Eev. A: T. B. Page. A special meeting of the trustees of:/ the South. Wairarapa. Hospital was held on Monday, the purpose of the meeting being to frame estimates for the ensuing l year. These will be submitted to' thai District Board at Mastertdn. The monthly meeting, of the Greytowtt Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr. D. P. Loasby) presiding. Councillors Coe, Webstar, Kaison, Trotman, and Haigh were also present. Mr. W. Workman was granted another twelve months' lease of the Park Reserve, at the same .price as last year.An offer was made by the West Council of a second-hand gas plant. The Waiohine River Board wrote relative to a road alleged to have been put across Tidy Street. After some discussion- the following resolution was carried: —"That, as there was no; obstruction that would interfere with the approach from Udy Street, the matter be allowed to stand. Reports were received from' the health ia.'epector, Works Committee, Finance Committee, and Lighting Committee. Th* Mayor reported that he had had ah interview with the Prime Minister regarding a loan of .££ooo for lighting purposes, and'-, had been advised to lodge an application in about six months' tiine from date. v SHANNON. A weD-contested football match tneii place at Shannon, on Saturday, when tha. local senior combination played a. drawn! ■ game with Foxton Albion- Gmnstonffscored a try. for Shannon, while Wiaiata, got over for Fcxton. The local bacfc^ ■ are likely to prove a much better combination than Shannon had last season. Grimiitoiie, Stevenson, Pope, Dalziell, and Rapu were conspicuous for Shannon* while Dunne ana Winiata played good' games for Foxton. Mr. F. Foster was referee.; -.On - the same day Shannon juniors were defeated by 10 points to nil at Foxton. The Shannon Tennis Club held tksirs annual "social" and dance in-the Druids*''' Hall on Friday evening last, when a number of visitors from the surrounding districts attended. Miss Silvester won the 1 ladies' euchre prize, and Mr. T. C. Dunckley won the gentleman's prize. Miss • L. A of the local Schcol i Committee was to bo held on Tuesday' evening to consider recommendations from householders, especially, the follow* ing—"That, during the winter months, from May 1 to October 1,. the' school . should open at 9.80, half-hour for dinner, 1 and close at 3 p.m:" The reason of this " recommendation is that the children h&.vo " to walk from two to three miles to school. " In the summer time,',the carts are ruu- ; ning to the creamery, and tho childron ! are thus able to get a rido. To fix the ' closing hour at 8.30 p.m. means that' ; those who reside furthest away will not 5 reach their homes till dark;." There is a movement afoot in Carterton, ' to form'' a glee club, and the effort givea indication of success. Petersen aro interesting themselves : in the matter, and possibly this is sufficient guarantee that something good will 1 be produced when the club is organised. Probably the largest pumpkin in the : South Wairarapa this season is one'grown ■ bv Mr. F. Court, of Waihakeke. It weighs 1031b. ' A one-man handicap coupling event, i run under the auspices of the local fire brigade, . was won by N. M'Kenzie, from scratch. The time was 10 4-ssec., ' this including a one second" penalty. ! C.
