LABOUR AND POLITICS.

"EVE OF DEVELOPMENTS." 1 WHAT IS TAKING PLACE. (Br Telegraph.—Prssi Associations Auckland, May 3. From all accounts matters in connection with the organisation of tho Independent Labour party, formed la6t year, are in a very forward state. Fired with the success of the Labour party in the Commonwealth, the leaders of the local movement are feeling very sanguine, and Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., has been doing a lot of organising work throughout the Dominion. Through his efforts the Federation of Labour has be«n formed, and it is claimed that this federation will prove to be a very powerful factor in New Zealand politics within a very 6hort time. '*■

It was stated to-day, by a well-known official of the party, that things are at present on the eve of a big developnient, which will become public at no distant date. As it is, considerable organising work ia going on, especially in this city, some of the organisers addressing no fetter three meetings a night, all behind closed doors. It is also stated that the party is nmngqing a large campaign fond, the support coming from the most unthough-t-of sources, and it is further stated that offers have been received'from five members of the Government party in the House to stand as Labour candidates at the next election, and that, prior to the next polls, five prominent members of the Australian Labour party will come over and help in organising and electioneering work. . . It is understood that certain proposals are to be made to Mr. W. F. Massey, leader of the Opposition, and, in the event of their acceptance, the Labour organisation and vote will be given to the Reform party in every constituency which is contested in the country.
