yim'l'HHH. CHANGES. In addition to the appointment of Mr. H. H. Ostler, barrister and solicitor of Wellington, to a position on the staff of the. Crown Law Office, Mr. L. G. assistant Crown Law Officer, retires from that Department, and at his own desire has been appointed to fill the, vacancy in the magistracy occasioned through the retirement of Mr. Turnbull. Speaking on the, subject the Hon. Dr. Findlay , remarked yesterday that the changes were part of ft larger schemo by which it vfus hoped to have the Crown Law Office equipped to do a much greater share of tho Crown Law work of the Dominion and so save a very considerable sum every year. Mr. Keid, who will do relieving wort to begin with and will then probably take chargti of the Wairarapa district, was born in the Falkland Islands, but educated in Tasmania where his father, Captain Eeid of the 45th Regiment, was sent out as Staff-Officer of Pensions. Coming to New Zealand in 1869, Mr. Eeid was articled to Messrs. Buller and Eeid, of Hokitika, and afterwards completed 'his articles with Messrs. Travera and Olliver, at Wellington, in 1879. TJp till 1882 when he was appointed assistant Crown Law Officer and Revising Barrister of Friendly, Societies, he practised first on tho West Coast and then at Timaru. In the absence of the SolicitorGeneral Mr. Eeid has frequently had to carry out the duties appertaining to that office.
