WRESTLING.
T —-».. ', .-■ ; CHEEPIIiLOD'. AND STCSffi. Contrary to expectation i&e jonag. Swiss, Andre Cherpillod, gained a somewhat oasy victory in., his, wrestling match with' Charles' AWrica, says th« London "Sportsman." Bearing in inind what the done, and the strength and power possessed by each, a stout and. ■ determined. battle was 'anticipated..... Ihe business was certainly .brisk enough, a> long as it lasted, but .taking into consideration his natural advantages, for he stood 6ft. 3in. and scaled 15st- to the ISst. 6in- of his opponent, Stone gave a somewhat disappointing show. Hβ carried too much flesh, and yet looked bis and powerful enough to move pretty well anything. He laeked the speed of the Swiss, hcwever, who proved himself not only the more skilful wrestler, but the stronger man in the bargain. The bout was. tho best of three falls in the cateh-as-catch-can style for .£IOO aside, and, although no championship rested on the result, it was understood to be a fair test of the abilities-a try out, as the Americans put it—of Cherpillod, who, it will bo remembered, only some six weeks back won the heavy-weight belt at the National Sporting Tournament at the Alhambra. Stone was a spectator on that occasion, and after seeing the. Swiss throw the burly Laurent le Beancairoia he er- § reused a desire to clinch a match, with le'wrnner there and then. This did mot suit the convenience of CherpifloQ, but, Stone pressing, the men came to terms m due course. • All being in readiness tho struggle commenced. The men clashed instantly, and , in the first few seconds Stone was behind. He got on a leg-hold and tried to haul Cherpillod over, but the latter was immovable. Then Stone fixed a hammer-lock which looked ,deadly and unbreakable, but Cherpillod broke-it IB marvellous, fashion. Stone next trietl a foot-hold with no better Tesnlt, and at three minutes Cherpillod broke free and got behind. It was now Stone's tup ta Some rough and strenuous wort was seen, and Cherpillod, displaying surprising power, turned his man over, a clear flying fall. Keepine up the attack tho\ Swiss remained on top, «nd, fixing a half-nelson and leg-hold, he pressed his ' man down and gained the first fall in 9min. /Following an interval of fifteen minutes the men resumed. Some thirty seconds were spent in trying for a hold, and then, in trying for a buttock, Stone slipped and'dropped into a waist-hold. Cherpillod began attacking with great resolution, but Stone got away, only to be again underneath. Once more the American broke holds, but ' Cherpillod had the pace of his man, and assumed the aggressive. Stone's chief mark seem- , ed to be the foot, but this notwrthstanding the Swiss forced him to one ehoulder. The American saved himseK for a while with leg-locks, but, try as he would, he failed to get away. Again the business got rough. Cherpillod ' narrowly escaped' putting on the strangle-hold through Stone holding his Tight wrist from the other side, while the American:was polling Cherpillod's foot with the bar in amanner that threatened certain fracture. Cherpillod appealed, as did the American. Gradually the last-named was pressed down, and the Swiss won the fall m 7min. 27sec., and with it the match. The victor was brilliant, all things considered, and Stone a disappointment, as stated..
