Hearst, newspaper owner and millionaire, is suing the "New York Times" for 100,000 dollars (,£20,000) damages for publishing a speech' by the Mayor of New York (Judge Gaynor) accusing Mr. Hearet of tampering with the reproduction of a 45.000 dollars cheque paid by the city to a Tammany lawyer. Mr. Hearst published the reproduction for the purpose of suggesting that Mayor Gaynor was wring the city funds to repay Tammany for its support at his election.
