News from the West Indies tells of tho unmasking of another Haitian plot, and with it the sudden death of its mainspring and financier, ex-President Nord Alexis. . A revolution caused a change of Presidents in the Eepublic of Haiti in Novoniber, 1908. The then President, General Nord Alexis, an aged negro, was compelled to take refuge on a French warship. Ho passed through the streets of the capital (Port-au-Prini*o to the harbour with a French flag fastened round his body, the French Consul accompanying him. Notwithstanding these precautions, ho was assaulted by the mob, and narrowly escaped assassination. The leader of the General Simon, also a negro, was eleoted President in his stead. Kecontly a plot was organised in Kingston, capital of the British possession of Jamaica, to depose General Simun, nnd to proclaim as President, in his stead, General Firmin. Firmin is a negro who Borne years ago headed a plot against the rule of Nord Alexis, but on this occasion the latter was financing the Firminist conspiracy. The design was ohecked owing to Nord Alexis dying suddenly in Jamaica. The cause of his death is not known. '
The discovery of the conspiracy in the Haitian capital has resulted in the imprisonment of many popular persons.
