Two thousand children from fifty Socialist Sunday schools were included in the Hydo Park demonstration. The international platform speakers included French, German, Hungarian, and Russian Socialists.
Mr. Herbert Burrows, who presided, declared that the demonstrators were not merely asking for an eight or a fourhour day, but' for the formation of a great international commonwealth. Large Socialist meetings were held in many of the provincial towns.

May, 2, 11.5 p.m.) Paris, May 2. . After the French Premier; M. Briqnd, had refused to authorise a May Day procession, 22,000 troops were drafted into Paris. The Confederation of Trades Unions issue a manifesto declaring: "We are entitled to a procession, but" let us avoid massacres..-' The soldiers' orders include the instruction: 'If you don't wish to be shot, fire upon the revolutionists on the First.'" Many of the intending demonstrators resented the Confederation's change of plans, and. denounced the organisers for their cowardice. .' ■ ' . Demonstrations were held in the French provinces, but were without any notable feature! • . • , / A bomb of a most dangerous character exploded harmlessly in front of the offices of the Commissary.
