GREAT FINISH. ARNST DEAD-HEATED ON THE POST FINAL NEXT SATURDAY. By Telegraph—Press Association— Oopyriebt (Bee. May 1, 5 p.m.) Sydney, May 1. The three heats of tie "Parramatta Hundred," the big sculling handicap, were oont-ested on. Saturday, the final being set down for next Saturday., There was fine weather, and the presence of R. Arnst attracted an unusually large crowd,, who wero rewarded as much by his brilliant sculling in the middle stages of his race as by the dramatic finish in which G. Matterson, with a sudden sport, dead-heated the world's champion. Hie banks we're lined with spectators, and the river was alive with boats. The water was in good condition. The first heat provided a splendid finish between the Towns brothers, who held a prominent position from the mile. Theo. Towns, with 60 seconds start, beat his brother, Norman, with 38 seconds, by a length. Felton, with 32 seconds, was a-good third. Harry Pearce, the Australian champion, with 10 seconds, gave up at the 2j-mile post. The winner's time was 18 minutes 51 seconds. In the second heat, P. Matterson, with 65 seconds start, held the lead till passing the mile' and a half, when Zietsci, with. 46 seconds, went tc. the front, and at- two aifles had twp lengths to the good. Fogwell, with 18 seconds, made a splendid but unsuccessful effort .to overhaul the leaders. Ztetsch landed a winner by a length and a half, a couple of lengths separating the second and third.

J. ■■ Arnst (brother of R. Arnst) started, but was out of the race at an early stage. The time was 18 minutes 47 seconds.

' Peter Kemp, junior, with 60 seconds, overhauled the limit man, Backhouse, with 100 seconds, before reaching the half-mile, Tom Kemp, with 72 seconds, and Gr. Mattered], with 46 seo. onds, were dose behind. At the mile and a quarter Arnst siot past Backhouse and went in chase of Matterson, who! was' now leading froni the two Kemps.. ' * Just before reaching the . gasworks Arnst electrified the crowd by shooting through Laycock, Tom Kemp, and Fisher.: A moment later he Bettled Peter Kemp's chance. At two miles Arnst was level with Sid Kemp, and only three lengths astern of Mattereon, and at two and a quarter miles he was ahead. Caught Napping, and Dead-Heated. The champion eased up after overhauling Mnttotson, and was apparent-. ly taking a wyi-earned breather, wben young Matterson worked a surprise sprint. Before Arnst realised, Matterson was upon him, and a desperate finish resulted in a dead heat between them. S. Kemp, with 36 seconds, filled third place. The time was. 17 minutes 50 seconds.. ■ . Hagney (the ex-cyclist, wio had 12 feconds in the Parramatta Hundred, but who is not mentioned in to-day's cabled report of the heats) and Hany Pearoe (champion of Australia, who, with 10 seconds start, failed in his heat in the Hundred) have'lodged second_ deposits for a race for the championship of Australia on May 28, INTER-STATE EICHT OAR. ■ CHAMPION SCULLS. The inter-State eight-oar race resulted: New South Wales i 1 Victoria 2 Tasmania 3 »The New South Wales crew went to the front at the end of a quarter of a mile, were never headed, and won comfortably by threo lengths. The time of tho winning crew was 15 minutes 27 seconds. The Champion Sculls resulted: M'Villy ■ l Iyens 2 Priddle 3 M'Villy defeated. Ivens by two lengths.
