OBITUARY.
ME. ABTHTTE BEAUCHAMP,
Mr Arte Beauchamp (father of Mr. Harold Beauchamp, of this 01(7) died at picton jestoday. morning.. fi e was in his eighty-third year.-being born in 1827. J±iS;Me was an eventful one. He armed in Sydney from London by the fMque Loch Nagar, a small vessel of less than two hnndred tons, at\the end of 1818. After remaining in Sydney for a snort-period, he proceeded to Victoria, being, attracted thither by the discovery or gold. On the diggings he carried oh business successfully as a general merchant. When the: output of gold commenced to decline he sold, out, and migrated to Melbourne, where, in' conjunction with one of his brothers, he iounded the firm of Beanchamp Bros auctioneers. This business still nourishes under the conduct of two of Mr. Beanchamp s nephews ;and their sons. In, 1861 Mr. Beauchamp chartered and loaded the barque Lalla ,Kookh with , a cargo of general merchandise, and sailed with his wife and family to Picton. Arriving at that town he established - himself as a merchant, and. was joined by Messrs James M'Beth and William Welford, both of whom, have.long since passed away During his'residence in Picton, Mr. Beauchamp tobk an active interest in politics, firstly as a member of the /Provincial Council, and later as a member of the House of Representatives.' It was as member of the Provincial Council that, in .opposing the abolition of the provinces, he made his famous stonewalling speech, which occupied nine hours in delivery. It is stated that, his remarks were so en- . livened by wit and clever "repartee that ho managed to maintain the attention of the House during the whole of the time that he was speaking. 'Upon retiring from the House of Representatives he waa succeeded by the late Captain, Kenny, M.L.C.. Always of a roving disposition, Mr. Beauchamp in tarn moved to and carried on business at Westport, Wanganui, Wellington, and Christchurch. In this city he had.. as .partners Messrs.']?. Noble Campbell and Robert Laery (both deceased),;their business being conducted on "the .site at present occupied by Mrs. Cenci, milliner, Lambton Quay. For the last few years of his life, Mr. Beauchamp and his 'wife resided'' at. Picton. His family comprised seven som> and one daughter. He is survived by his widow and four sons, the eldest of whom is Mr. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of the Bank of Now Zealand.
