There was a-,very good attendance at .. ■ tho ■ Manawatu Horticultural Society'i chrysanthemum show this, afternoon and' evening, and on all • hands it-was acknowledged that the exhibition, was much the best which the society has' yet held. : A 'narrow escape from a serious acci- - dent happened in Main Street this morning. It seems .that, a gravel cart was crossing the railway line at the Scandia Street crossing just as the early morning ' train to 'Wauganui came " along. The driver apparently'did not notice the approach ot: the train, and so close was it that the engine tore the tail board off the cart. The train was quickly stopped, but finding that this was tue only damage it proceeded ou its way. Several of the local police .force are ai present on sick leave as the. result ol .«■ ' posure duriug the i'owelka chase. ■-■',' The' sum of .£2lO has been allotted a* prize money for the military tournament which is to be held in November next. Keeling took placo this afternoon, and was very largely , attended, old settledfrom all over the district paying the last tribute of respect to (ho.deceased. Among,.: those present were a number of Masons' and members of other societies of which the. late Mr. Keeling was a . highly-re- . speoted member. The Mayor and. Borough Councillors 'also attended, ' and provided " the pall-bearers. Archdeacon Harper conducted the burial service at All Saints' Church and at the graveside, while the Masonic service was read by W.M. Bro. M'Knight. Tile coffin was covered with a profusion of beautiful wreaths, among them being tributes from the Borough Council, the employees of the; council, the Fire Brigade, and the Court Mana- . watu, A.0.F., the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, the United Mauawatu Jjodge, and tho Bowling Club; '-'■•'.-
