CHURCH MEETINGS.

ST. PAUL'S PARISH. The annual nieofcrog of the parishionersof St. .. Paul's, was held in ..the Sydney Street Schoolroom last even-, iig, the .vicar (the lxe\ 1 H. Sprott) occupying i the chairv In 'addressing those, present ..lie vicar' dealt at Some considerable length with the resolutions proposed by the Bishop of iChristchurchi iit . the last meeting' or the General Synod concerning the autonomy, of the Church of the Prqyjnce oi-Now Zealand. Tho resolutions, howover, had not been carried. It would, ip, said,; be a'distinct gain if in 'Now .Zealand they were allowed to adapt the ■services of' tho'Churcli to' their own needs.' ■ Tho lessons were not always appropriate, and in one or two in-' •stances it required a' subtle mind to see .whepe the references came in. He had' noticed that- within the Church there were . two distinct congregations, thoso 1 who came in the morning and those who calmo at night. : , No doubt' they liad good' excuses for not being present on both occasions; but those who went in the evening missed a very beautiful part of - the services. If ■! the, evening lessons were Shortened it might be possible to bring in the Litany, which the evening congregation, missed. If any changes were to be made in tho Prayer Book,, they should, ; be made in a deliberate way..Any contemplated changes- should be brought forward at ono General Synod, and then dealt .with 'finally at a mooting of. tho General •Synod:three years later, so that no illconsidered change would be made. Mr. jSprott also; spoke': of the coming General'. Mission. Mr.. Robinson, who had ■been' his'afcisiant during tho last three years had' teturned to England last May, 'and "although since then he had apt been' successful'in finding a successor,- he had been afforded a great deal 'of-help in the "department which: had. leen Mr. -Robinson's particular care.' Mi._ Martin Clark had taken over the ■duties of superintendent of the Sunday ■School,.) and had been mpst zealous in the. work, and Mr. Sprott expresses his gratitude toWhe large and earnest staff of-.:teachers who 'had assisted him. Peoiple in.-the Church seldom realised- the debt Which was duo to those who .took 'up this . work Sunday after-Sunday. ;The .children's services in: the:Tinakori-Boad Schoolroom had been held by Mr. Beere and Mr. Brown/'and by Sir' William Steward, when; they had;-been .unable to; '.be' present, and -his .' gratitude.. was duo to.theso gentlemen. A great deal of. -work had» been done by the Dorcas |Society. during tho ; .past winter owing to the period of exceptional depression, and thanks were .due, to. those who'had provided . coal. He wished, to express appreciation of .the' great, amount -of, work done by Mrs. Warren. In regard to the church building fund, it was no■cessary : .th'at" this fund .should be put' on' a sound basis. .. It would ;be with-a , great'ifeeling of regret."that-they.would' see "the r . church' replaced, but, still that timV'waS' coming.' ..There were few place's :so " devotional in atmosphere as St. Paul's, and a stranger "who visited New " Zealand froni Rhodesia was par-, ticularly impressed by this feeling /which- it inspired.;. A certain , sum -.'or money,. though very large, had. already." been set' aside for, the purpose of. a new .building. The Kindergarten:. Scliqol ; ,in 'connection' ivith the Churchhad , carried on its work successfully. Ono hundred pounds had: been:donated towards an endowment : fund for it by Drl Pemiefather, and no doubt it would be the .nucleus of-some 'larger scheme for education in.the future. There was always' a' great . difficulty in maintaining a choir, and a great debt: of gratitude' was .due::'to' those members .who assisted in -' keeping it alive".- A'loss to it', had been: sustained 'in : tho.'death 'of• ;Mr. William Houghton, who liad' been a member of it for five years. Another loss that..had''been to . tho Cli'ur'chTduring; tlib; year!* had''~beeri "tlie"' death.ofvMr. C_. T. Richardson./ V ";V'f . annual report,'published in The Dominion ,on Monday' last, was : adopted.. 'rThe, l election'. of churchwardens" and members of the vestry was then ~ proceeded with, and Mr. P. Martin was appointed: churchwarden ; and Mr.:: Barraud parishioners' churchwarden. Those olected as vestry members were as follows :—Messrs.: T. . Russell, Stowe, ,0. Beere, -It. L. Mestayer, M. Clark, W. 'C. Kensington, Stephens, G. Shirtcliffe, B. H. Dean, and Professor Ea'sterfield; auditors, Mr. Kilgour and l ' Mr. G. Wright.

The Sunday School report was ~,read, and the Sunday School teachers' library, the existence of which was : due mainly to Mr.. Mestayer, was discussed. A gift of £20 towards the Sunday School treat fund by Mr. Bolton had/been received, and would later on bo keenly appreciated by the children. ''
