WAS SHE A SMUGGLER?

| MYSTERIOUS STEAMER, AN INCIDENT OFF NEW GUINEA COAST. STRANGER STEAMED OFF WHEN APPROACHED. By Telecraph—Presa Association—Gopyrlihl (Rec. April 27, 10 p.m.) Brisbane, April 27. Captain Hang, of the German steamer Siar (325 tons, owned by the New Guinea Company) reported that when off British New Guinea ho saw a steamer of about 3000 tons lying near Ketava Island, and, to the northward of the steamer, were five large native sailing vessels.

He shaped a course for the steamer to ask for Greenwich time, his chronometers being out, but the steamer wheeled around and went eastward at full-speed. The sailing vessels also turned back.

Captain Hang went after the steamer, but could not catch her. He came to the conclusion that she was engaged in smuggling, operations, and that she had mistaken the Siar for the New Guinea Government steamer Merrie England.

When the Siar had steamed a considerable distance • southward, • the steamer wheeled, round and appeared to go back towards Ketava Island.
