A STRANGE ASSOCIATION. _ An old man named M'Cormack, who was arrested, at, Alfredton (Victoria) on a nominal liad J6229S in .bank de- ■■\ posits, and . also cash in his possession; He appeared before the Ballarat Court on April 15. The old fellow was found in a house which had been supposed to '' be empty.He was faint from want 1 of food, and was sent to the gaol hospital for • attention. ; ' Hidden in the. lining of his coat were receipts for £221 in ths Bant of Victoria, while the sum of .£sl 13s. in notes, gold, and silver was' secreted in his 'clothing. . ... . Mr. Murphy, P.M. (to M'Cormack): . What do yon intend to dof Will you put something.in the poor box? ' Defendant protested that ho was a poor, , hard-working man. Mr. Murphy: We think yon should put .£5 in Iho poor box. - Defendant: I don't mind putting in; a trifle, but I'm a poor man. (Laughter.) Mr. Murphy: You must remember what might have Happened lo you if some dishonest person had found you. Defendant replied that lie would have lost tho money that was in tho 'bank.. He repeated "that lie was a' poor man, and could not give ;C!>. ' . ' Sub-Inspector Kyiin here reminded the Bench that - M'Cormack was liable "to a * fine of £25. ■ After again protesting that ho should ' fiot pay .£5. into the poor box, M'Cormack produced the monty. Ho was discharged.. and. again ..protested : When., he ;. was asked , to pay 2s. 6d. costs for cab hire. M'Corniack came to Australia'6o years aio with in hifi possesion. " " '
