THE RENAMING OF THE TOWN.
IBr Teloeraph.-Spocial Oorrosrondeatl , .Palmerston, April 26. The latest addition to the wild fowl in the Square.lakelet is a pukaki, presented by Mr. D. J. lovelock, • of Palmerston. The bird is taking kindly, to its new quarters, and is a source 6£ interest to visitors. ■, ' ? ' . ■• • The Hanawatu Horticultural Society's chrysanthemum show, which is to be I held on Wednesday and Thursday, promises to be a success, judging from the manner in whioh entries are coming in. Blooms are beiiig sent from air over the North Island; and the display of chrysanthemums, will , undoubtedly be the finest evor 6een in this town. The frnit and vegetable classes are also filling well. The catering for the show has been entrusted to Mrs. Jtawlins, of the White House, and,- needless to say, this department will be well looked after. The newly-fori!:cd Amateur Boxing Club ie going ahead by leaps and bounds. Already some hundred members have paid tbeir subscriptions, and the committee is being hard pushed to provide accommodation for the large numbers who attend the. practices three nights a week. The success of the movement is beyond expectations, and the question of engaging the services of a permanent instructor ie , being considered. The Campbell Sheet School Committee is arranging for the erection of a miniature rifle range at the school. The committee of management of the military tournament is securing a complete assortment of fireworks for a display on the first night of the next tournament in November. On the second night of the tournament the'usual military display will be given.
