NEW YORK'S GOVERNOR

TO BE A JUDGE. MR. HUGHES AND THE TRUSTS. By Teleeraph—Preis Association—Oopyrlcht (Rec. April 26, 9.30 p.m.) New York, April 2G. Mr. Chas. E. Hughes, who has been the Republican Governor of New York State since January 1, 1907, will succeed Justice. David J. Brewer (Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States sinci 1890) after qualifying for his new post during the October term. It is expected that in his position on the United States Supreme Court Benoh Mr. Hughes will hold the balance of power in the Court's decisions in actions against Trusts. iA POLITICAL CAREER DIVERTED. Mr. Chas. E. Hughes had a distinguished career at the Bar and as a law lecturer before becoming Governor of New York State on January 1, 1907, a post to which he was re-elected for a further two years' tercu from 1909, w> that his present tenure would ordinarily expire at the end of the present year. Mr. Hughes, who ia the son of a Baptist minister, has proved himself an uncompromising , enemy of corrupt corporations, and has also fought gambling in New York. He won fame by his masterly conduct of the prosecution in the New York insurance fraude. He is one of the strongest personal forces in' American public life, and many have looked to him as being likely one day to retain the Presidency for the Republican party. Now, apparently, he is transferred completely to- the judicial sphere, a development which ■ will . no doubt occasion some surprise. The position of a Justice of the United States Supreme Court is a very eminent one, and to attain it at the age of 47 is in itself a notable achievement. Justice David J. Brewer, ' born in Smyrna (Asia • Minor) 72 years ago, has been.a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 1890:.. "He was President of • the Venezuela Boundary Commission in 1896, and in 1898 a< member of the British-Venezuelan Arbitration Tribunal. He w tho. author of "American Citizenship," "The United States a Christian Nation," and other books. "•'..■■ '■ ' . '
