' The monthly meeting of the council of the ;Palmerston Chamber 'of, Commerce was: hold last-evening. -. The/ president. Captain Haydoh,.occupied the chair, and there were also present. Messrs. M. A. Eliott,-. J. Wallace, L.-H. Collihsoh; G W.: Handeri,", G. H. Bennett,, JV A. Nash, : andß E; Gardiner. It was decided to support; the proposal of the' South. Canterbury Chamber :6f Commerce requesting the . Minister . for .Agriculture to amend the system of collecting agricultural -' statistics and, failing a- better system, to revert to; the old • style. It was also derided to- write;to the Postmaster-General. requesting that facilities be given -foj posting parcels up to 6 p.m.rso that they could be dispatched by the first mail in the morning, it, being pointed put that a postal clerk was now in attendance for other business, and;that the concession' asked .for would not entail .further'■; expense.. Three new members were elected. The Question of forming a new education district was discussed,- and it was 'resolved to request each sohool committee in the district to appoint at least three delegates _for a: conference, with the' objwt of. giving effect- to the movement. The'. president,: and ■Messrs. J. M;.'Johneton .and R. Gardner were appointed to represent the chamber on :a. deputation to t_ne.Minister for Lands in. respect to eutting up Native lands within the borough. : Mr..-]) , .. S. Goldingham wrote on the. question of. local industries in 'the town,; and .suggested that: a committee" Bhould. be set up to moke inquiries, and (if': the report were favourable) to' call a meeting.of citizens to consider the matter.,'' The. letter .was held over till next .meeting.'--.:Severalvfirms wrote, protesting against'.the charge made by the telephone bureau for; accounts 'rendered daily, and requested.the .chamber. to take . action with a view to haying the old system reverted t0..-.: The request was granted. A considerable amount of iisoussion toik place on Mr. E. Gardner's motion: "That, in the opinion of this chamber, the time has arrived when another effort should be made by: the, inhabitants of Palmets ton North .to'gjve the town a,new name to' distinguish it'from a town of n similar 'name in the South Island." The motion: was seconded by Mr. Collins'm. and carried irithout a dissentient voice.
