MINISTERS IN HAWKETS BAY.

OPENING OF A NEW BRIDGE. CBr Teleerooa.—Prosa Association.! Wairoa, April 23. The Hons. Messrs. M'Kenzie and Carroll arrived at Frasertown yesterday from Gisborne shortly after noon, accompanied by Mr. R'. W. Holmes (engineer-in-chief) Mr. . Armstrong (resident engineer), and Mr. M'Millau (district roaa engineer). After a slight delay, the Ministerial party proceeded to open the new Frasertown bridge, built by the Government at a oost of about £7000. The ceremony' of cutting the">ribbon was performed by Mrs. O'Neill, wife of a settler who laboured hard to get the bridge built.

Mr. M'Kenzie (Minister for Public Works), in' a brief speech, declared the bridge open, naming it Hamate Rangi, on the suggestion of Mr. Carroll, after a great Wairoa chief, a descendant- of Kahungunu. This greatly gratified >the Maoris. ; ■ .

Ministers and settlers, were entertained at dinner by Mr.' Powdrel], the county chairman. Deputations were received in the evening at Wairoa by the Ministers, who will lea-ve by steamer this afternoon.
