LOSS OF A BRITISH BARQUE.
THE PROVINCE FOUNDERS. While bound to Christiania, under charter to load baltic for Melbourne, the four-masted barque Province, one of the finest-looking sailers yet seen in Australian waters, ran ashore off Linden acs on March 3 last, and subsequently foundered in deei> water. The information yet to hand is meagre, but it seems that the vessel was bound from Tyne, and at i o'clock on ■ the day mentioned grounded.. Attempts .were, at once made to refloat hor and ultimately proved successful, 1 but it was discovered that the Province was badly damaged, and was making water very rapidly. Preparations wore at onco made to leave.the ship to her fate, but despite the fact that ftis wife and child and officers joined the crew in tho boats, Captain Jones refused to leave the ship. Ho threatened to shoot with his revolver any person who tried to force him to abandon the sinking barque, and all attempts to induco him to join his family were of no avail. So in order to hnvo further life the boats were beaded .for tho shore, which was readied ■in safety. After drifting for about half a mile the vessel filled and disappeared.
The Trovinco was an iron four-masted barque of 1812 tons gross and tons not register, and was built, by W. Doxford and Sons, Ltd., of Liverpool, who, by the way, were the owners of. the fourmasted barque Kate Thomas, which, according to a cable received a few days ago, foundered off Land's End after being in collision while on a passago to Port Talbot from Antwerp. In this case ID persons, including the captain's and chief officer's wives, perished.
