[■■ The annual meeting of the Wellington VLadies' ChristianiAssociation, with those tof its associated charities the Levin Memorial Home and . the Alexandra Come, 'Were hold- yesterday afternoon in St. John's Schoolroom} the Rev. J. B. Glasson presiding. - The Ladies'-Christian. Association has now completed its thirty-first year, and as usual the record of its past year's work-'.is one it may well;beiproud of, representing as it does a great expendi-ture.'of,-careful thought and steady work. -A great part of the work is done 'during eight or nine months of the year, ..jfhen the Dorcas Society meets every week, and gives a whole afternoon to , sewing for. the poor. In these meetings a very large-amount of work is done,-and it is with much concern that the committee finds this year that it has not enough workers.; In the annual report an appeal is made to women ..of ■\ leisure to help at" these : Dorcas meetings. It .is the .great aim- of- ■-,the association "to give help to tl)ose who need it, with-.,out,i-pauperising,-'any..of the.,recipients. This last year a, scheme was adopted : whereby, those .obtaining relief: in the . way of clothing, sheets, or blankets, •: were asked to contribute, by. ■ smallweekly payments, - the : cost of; the material, the. work being-given free, and^thi?'has. been .carried out. very successfully. ■• .The -.last winter had been an "exceptionally hard one, and it had been very .difficult, to find work for those who could do it; while there had been.heavy demands on the-association's resources, but subscriptions had come in, and they were able'to help all cases i brought/under their notice. The society wasvalways.very careful to have each case., investigated, and Mrs. Belworthy, their visifor, nisde herself with-.the. circumstances,-of .all! i., . After-.the report , had been.'read, Mrs M'Lean, the hon. treasurer,'expressed her..thanks to' Miss, Lockie, • during .her: absence, in \ England, .had car-' Tied-'.out the -dutie's.'of,-.. treasurer' as well; as .secretary. Mrs. McLean stated that she hoped that it-%ould be possible ;to "find ..some, volunteer., -collectors. ■•. The report in' general, was satisfac-"i lory, but it,'was with regret that, the resignation of..the matron, Miss Gifford, had been'..received. A very" suitable Matron/Miss Jolly, had been appointed in her iplaco',. with Mrs. Macdonald as assistant. .During the year 11 children lad been admitted to the home, and 11 had left, and there wero now 26chiltiren, ten of whom were under seven and.one over sixteen. The committee ecooTded its hearty thanks to Dr. J. H-. Kemp, the hon. physician; to Mr. Hoby, who kindly yavo his professional ' services;, to the many friends who had from 'time to time sent donations, or given treats to the children; and to the continuous givers; Mr. Hurcombe, who noppliesa fish dinner every week; Mrs. Elliott, for fruit and vegetables each week; and the.pupils 6f Misses Saber's «nd Richmond's schools,"who provide* clothing: for. one child. ; The following;officers were.elected:— President, Miss; E. The balance-sheet showed that £207 4s. 6d. had been received in payment from inmates, and £102 7si.7d. in sub- , jcriptions. Tne: household expenses (fox 26 children and 2 adults) had been only £204 Is. 10d., and in addition to this had been an expenditure; ".'of '£42 18s. for clothing, £130 14s. for salaries und wages, and. £91 os. Bd. for additions io the: building. .....; .. .. ... ■'.'■' ALEXANDRA HOME. - The thirtieth annual report of the aiexa'ndra Home was read at the anjiual meeting yesterday. ■■■• . The committee had received with regret the resignation of Miss Pinch, who lad for twelve years been' matron of the institution, .and Miss ' Watt, who for eleven years had been head laundress-. Miss Clarke, the new ' matron, was a highly-qualified nurse, and possessed qualities that made her especially fitted for her work, but the committee was still endeavouring to obtain tho services of a competent permanent laundress, v The committee acknowledged the gift of money or other dona-, tions from many friends.
The, balance-sheefc-showed that the year's laundry receipts .had amounted to £246 4s. lpd., and. subscriptions to £97 3s. lid., the Government subsidy £150. 4s. 5d., interest £103, and maintenance £94 2s. ..'The main items of expenditure were: Htmso. £307 Bs. 2d., salaries £230 Is. 9d., and clothing £15 12s.'5d. ■'" ••■■■■■-.-■».■■ ,
