THREE-CORNERED FIGHTS LIKELY.
Mr. Thomas Burt and Mr. C. Fenwick were, in tho old House of Commons, members, for the Northumberland mifiing constituencies of Morpeth and Wansbeck respectively.. They were Labour members of the old school, and refused to take the party pledgo, and that put them at enmity with the modem Labour party. .-..••' ■ Mr. Burt's anti-strike attitude during the recent Northumberland mining trouble brought him into further hot water with the local miners. The upshot was that both members stood in the January election as Liberals, in dual contests with Unionists, and. Mr. Burt was returned, by 2865 votes (as compared with a majority of 3599 in 1906), and. Mr. Fenwick was re-elected by 6222 (1906 majority, 7176). According to to-day's cablegram, the passive hostility of the Northumberland miners will become active at next election, when they .will run Labour candidates in both constituencies—a likely' result being two , triple fights, which will make the Unionist a winner in each case. ■, . . :
