Major P. Connolly, of County Limerick, Ireland, leaves by the lonic for Eio, en route ' for Buenos Ayres and Valparaiso. Major Connolly has been, touring the Dominion, and for the last few weeks has been staying in Wellington. Dr. H. Gilmer, MLD., has been appointed surgeon to H.M. prison at Wellington.' :. . The Prime. Minister journeyed: from Mangaweka" on Wednesday: night to : . Palmerston North, reaching Levin' early yesterday morning. Haying breakfasted with thb Mayor (Mr. Gardener), Sir Joseph'was driven round the. district, visiting among other places the; area \, where the sand is encroaching ou certain property, which it is desired should bo acquired for closer ■ settlement, and Lake Horowhenua. After receiving a number of deputations, ho was entertained at lunch at the Wereroa Hotel by the Horowhenua County Council and the Levin Borough Council. In the afternoon ho opened the new post office at Wereroa, after which, at 4.45 p.m., he joined tho New Plymouth mail train for Wellington. ' .'•■' .. :

Mr. Edward Tristram, formerly of Auckland, where he was well known as an art instructor, left for Vancouver by tho Mokoia yesterday.
Captain Williams, of the Cobar, has many sympathisers in connection with the recent Puchess-Cobar collision. At a meeting held at Rona Bay on Wed* nesday evening, presided over by the Mayor, Mr. J. Barr, the following resolution was carried:—"That this meeting of Eastbourno residents, recognising the unfailing courtesy, gentlemanly behaviour, and able seamanship of Captain Williams, desires to place on record its sympathy-with him in the unfortunate position' in which he has been placed." On the motion of MrF. Wills it was decided to set up a committee to solicit subscriptions towards , a testimonial for Captain ' Williams. Over £20 was subscribed in the room,' and it was announced that £12
had already been collected at Karaka Bay. The i'und, which already amounts to £40, will; bo augmented by the proceeds of a dance to be held at the end oE next week. ; ■
