CITY COUNCIL.

THE BUSINESS OF COMMITTEES. The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last evening, and attended by the Mayor (Dr. Newman),' Councillors Smith, Cohen, Balliuger, Frost, Trevor, Atkinson, Dovine, Fitzgerald, Carinichacl, Hindmarsh, Fletcher, and Morrah. FINANCE AND PROPERTY. -The , Finance and Property Committee recommended:— '■

That three applications for loans on the deferred payment system to carry out the drainage to, their properties, be granted. .

That the application of Messrs. 0. and A. Odlin for the construction of a crossing over, Jervois Quay, from the fire station to Cable Street, be ' not granted.

That the,, petitioners for improvements at Coromandel Street be informed that the question of cutting away the hump in the roadway in front of Mr. Barber's residence, estimated. to cost £225; would be considered in this year's estimates, and that their requests regarding a reservoir and zig-zag footway be replied to in terms of the city engineer's report.

That accounts amounting! to £10,055 3s. sd. be passed for payment.

.' Tho report was adopted. /' TRAMWAYS. The Power Stations and Tramways Committee recommended:— That the petitioners for the extension of the lighting mains to Mornington be informed that owing. to the largo > expense involved, and the comparatively small prospective return, the work cannot be carried out at the present time. That a temporary shelter-shed Vbe erected on a portion of a right-of-way lying on tho south side of Messrs. Boutell and Cope's shop, Hataitai; and that the owners of .the way (Messrs. Moorh'ouse , arid Hadfield) be thanked for granting tho council permission to put it there.

The committee reported:— That a letter had been received from the New Zealand Shopkeepers' Association suggesting that; , with a view to providing more ■ protection . from the weather , for those, waiting fbr'tramcars on one side of Lambton Quay, the council make arrangement with shop.keepers in the matter of the erection of light verandahs: The committee recommended that the Shopkeepers' Association be informed that the 'council could not entertain thjs proposal. /

■ That a deputation from the Hataitai and Rosencath Ratepayers' Association waited on them to urge tho construction of a tramway to Roseneath, via'Waipapa lload, and that they have instructed the engineers to report.. The reported was. adopted.

BATHS AND RESERVES. The Baths and City Reserves Committee recommended: — That the city, solicitor be instructed te accept a surrender of Mrs. Valentine's lease of a strip of Town Belt at Oriental Bay, as the lessee declined to effect repairs to the fence.

That-the committee bo permitted to negotiate with the lessee of Section 38, Town Belt, for the resumption of a small portion of the section for the purpose of forming a track from the Brooklyn tram ■ track to. Brooklyn. . The report was adopted., BY-LAWS AND STREET LIGHTING. - The / By-Laws, Fire Brigade, . and S.treetJJighjting ■■CommiJtteo, ~.recom -'; f - ; . - ->" •• ..:.. That the street lamps be. erected, as recommended by the electrical engineer (14 in Seatoun Road). ■ # ■- ■•' ■- '; That''.the ■ resolution 'of the; council (March 10) dealing with the private ways 'at Talavera Terrace ,be rescinded,, in.so far as the condition'requiring tho sum of £220 to be paid for the efficient lighting of the ways in' perpetuity was concerned, and. that the following condition bo -substituted:—"That the sum of £114 be paid for the efficient lighting of tho ways in perpetuity." .

That/the application of Messrs;W. M. Bannatynb and Co., that the council should: (a) Declare a road 66 feet wide leading from Reserve C'to the corporation quarry; or (b) make a road giving access to their property along its northern boundary, bo not-entertained in its present-form.

The following recommendation of tho samo committee was, referred back for further consideration:— . '

•That Messrs. Eassoh, Ltd., be granted permission to erect four houses on the Onepu Estate, on levels slightly below the road level, arid to dispose of the stormwater, as proposed by them, provided they agree that,-if , during the present winter it is- found necessary, they will provide such filling as may be required, .and also provided that,. tho ground under and around the houses be graded, and drainage fittings, such as gully traps, etc., put in at such level as 'to permit of , the necessary grading being carried out. . '•■ •

Tho Libraries Committee reported having acknowledged the following gifts to tho Newtown Museum for the three months ended March 31: —Mrs. Harrison, macaw parrot; Mrs. Musker, Chinese finch; Mr. Giithrie, a M.-L. repeat revolver and Fijian spear; Mrs. T. Mills, a flintlock Tower rifle, used at Hutt. stockade; Miss E. Williams, rosella parrot; Mr. R. Burton, New Zealand red cap parrakeet; Mr. J. Ogden, Now-Zealand f ant-ails; Mr. G. Green, dragon flies; Mr. N. F. Marley, New.Zealand bulbs; Mr. A. Lawsou, New Zjaland green lizard; Miss Mann, spiders; Miss Humphrey; South Australian beans; Miss Peterson, New Zea-land-shells; Newtown Zoo, rhea, kaka, Japanese bantam, and giant petrel. The report was adopted.
