PROVINCIAL CENTRES.

(From Our Special Correspondent!.) —: fr_ • FEILDING. The Feilding Operatic Society lias, begun its rehearsal of "Tho Pirates oil I'enzauee." Tho two days' show nf the Kongotea Horticultural Society opened yesterday afternoon in ideal weather. Thoro was a largo attendance, and the entries were numerous and of excellent quality. •Mr. D.. 11. Guthrie, M.P., yesterday afternoon oliicially opened the three days' bazaar in the Drill Hall in aid of the fund to replace tho parish hall destroyed by fire some months ago. A business partnership (as grocers and ironmongers) lias just been entered into at Cheltenham by two young AVollingtonians, Messrs. Harry E. Redstone, and John A. E. Kerslake. It would seem _ that the present high prices ruling in Taranaki for dairy eattlo of the Jersey breed aro not altogothej confined to that district. At the Feilding yards this week a.nice line of heifers, sold on behalf of Mr. \Y\ L. Caldwell, of Colyton, made the very ■ satisfactory figure of £8 each—a figure which shows tho popularity of the "little Jersey" as a dairy cow, us well as the scarcity 0/ dairy cattle of the better sorts.

. It was thought up to the last moment 1 that the Mayor (Mr. Trewin) would allow himself to be nominated for the fifth time for the Mayoraty, but he did not do so. Tho ■ "surprise packet" wasMr. J. M. K. Lochhead' (president of the Bowlieg Club), who has entered the lists against Councillor Harford and Councillor Goodbehere. CARTERTON. It is understood that Mr. James Raid, of West Taratahi, intends shortly to subdivide'his farm. It is stated hero that Mr. W. F. Massej'j Leader of tho Opposition, is to be invited to give a political address in the Waifarapain tho near future. 1 MASTERTON. The first meeting of tho. newly-consti-tuted committee of tho '.'Waiiarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday in the office of the secretary (Mr. J. C. Boddington), there being present: Messrs. J. fi. Keith (chairman), H. J. O'Leary, JVC. Ewington, Murray, Jackson, W. Fisher, J. Miller, and J. Morris.. ' Dr. Valiiiiino wrote stating that, in view of the fact .that little or no nuisance is being caused' by the present, septic tank arrangements, ho would suggest that further action regarding this matter should bo deferred until he had an opportunity of personally visiting the hospital. . It was accordingly decided that tho'matter should stand over for the ■ present. -The treasurer's statement

I showed a credit balance of .£B7O 2s. 3d. The annual statement showed the receipts to bo .6,1110 iis. od.; expenditure, .£2BBO lis. lid.: balance from last vear, .£515 . Od.; bnlanco this year, .£B-U 18s. -Id.; assets, Mi.ill 4s. Cd.; liabilities, ,£892 ■Is. 10J. ' GREYTOWN. Mr. D. P. Loasby has again been elected Mayor for Groytown, unopposed. Messrs. Olifent and Trotman were unopposed for seats on the Greytown Town Lands Trust. WOODVILLE. At the final meeting of the Woodvillo District High School Committee, it.was decided to ask tho householders' meeting, which takes place next Monday, to vote 011 the question of striking a Hd. levy for Standard VII, and Od. for Standards VI, V, IV, for tho purpose of covering the costs of stationery tor each pupil for the year. . The committee find that something of this nature will have to bo done, as tho grant allowed by tho board will not cover ordinary expenses by some pounds. Another very peculiar position will fall to the new committee in regard to the money collected to erect a gymnasium for the school, ,a sum of '.£2O, or thereabouts, was received, aucl is subsidised by Government (pound' for pound), but the board ask the handing over of tho money to them and the right of determining • how it is to bo spent. The local, committee's idea of a gymnasium and that of the board may not agree. There is consequently likely to bo a dead-lock regarding the erection, of the .gymnasium. A small debt case had'a curious ending here on Tuesday. The proprietor of "The Examiner" sued E. Gallichan, the organiser of the Liberal Labour Association. The amount sued for was only £a 155., but M of it was for money lent. As the debt was contracted in the year 1902, tho magistrate had no option but to declare the account statute-barred, and offered the defendant a non-suit, which, of course, he was glad to accept. He claimed .£1 16s. for expenses, which were granted him. and he left the Court wearing a very pleasant smile. Then the amusing. part of tho proceedings came. Plaintiff drew the magistrate's attention to the fact that.defendant had not given notice of his intention to defend the action, as required by the hew Act, .which came into force on April 1: The magistrate was unaware of the alteration in tho law, but on' looking the; matter up' he ordered that the defendant be brought back. This was done, and then the magistrate told him that he. would allow the non-suit to stand, but he would not allow any expenses,, as the defendant had not complied with the law. The case is .to come on again iu ; another form. ' . ' . '
