Mr; J. E. Davenport, of Governor's Bay, Canterbury, is at present in Wellington,, making arrangements ' for tho shipment of stud sheep, which he has purchased to take to the 'Argentine by the Otaki, leaving Wellington about April 27, for Monte Video. Mr.Davenport has purchased 184 sheep, and is in negotiation for 10 raoro Eonmey Marsh' ewes, which will bring, the total up to 104 head. The ... consignment .is easily the largest made from New Zealand to the Argentine. Threo or four years aso Mr. Davenport took, across a previous lot of fifty, sheep—Lincolus, Corriedales, Romneys,' Border and EDglish. Leioesters, and merinos—and disposed of them at'very satisfactory prices. Tho details of tho present 'shipment' were'• published • in Xhr Dominion at the end of last month. The sheep have- been taken from tho stud flocks of representative breeders throughout the Dominion. In conversation yesterday, Mr.: Davenport said he' had had the first pick of every flock drawn upon. It would take up too much space, and perhaps weary the reader, to srive details of. the breeding of all the sheep. In the Shropshires, for instance, 'here are five rams purchased from Sir George Clifford, one by .Voyager (imp.), three by Compositor .(imp.), and one by ■Ashlyn's Derby (imp!). This last' sire ivas champion at the Royal Show at Derby.. Eivo Border Leicester rams are from Mr. W. Grant,, of Tiraaru, and all of : these 'aro sired by a ram imported from Messrs. A. and J. -R. Smith, the well-known, breeders of Gallalaw. .The ten English Leicester ewes are all .by. sires bred by Mr. E. F. Jordan, the noted breeder.. In Southdowns there aro two rams from Mr. James Johns, of Belfast, by Dunn 69th (imp.), and three ewes by Collie 7th (imp.). . The sixteen Lincolus from Mr. T. Tanner, of. Havelock North, • are all by ohampion stud rams, and one can go on through .the list Besides the sheep twenty thoroughbred liorses i are being taken across. The stock will not be 6hown' at the big exhibition,.-butwill be on view privately. ■ ' . ■' ■"■■'. Mr. Davenport' has: made., numerous trips homo, to England, and has brought out large numbers of pedigree animals to New Zealand. To mention,just a few names, he has imported stock for'Mri R. D. M'Lean, Sir. George Clifford, Mr. James Johns, .Mr.. W.. Grant; MfJ T.' Upton, and many, other well-known breeders. In one'seasori,two years ago' the stock for whose introduction he .was responsible won 28 championships and 25 firsts, a pretty creditable record. Among, his importations.have been a Shropshire-ram. at 250. guineas for Mr. ,T. Upton, and one at 150 guineas for Sir George Clifford. After disposing of his stock in the Argentine,' Mr. Davenport will go to Great Britain to. purchase;a quantity of pedigree sheep, returning to New Zealand Tabout the New Year...
