THE TURF.
NOTES : AND COMMENTS. [By Glencoe.] Advices received from Auckland state that the Ellerslio trainer, T. A. Williams, will mako a trip south for the Trentham and Eiccarton . jumping fixtures, and that his team will most likely consist of Dawn (originally purchased by Air: Vi\ J. Ralph with a view to winning a National), Shrannel, who already has a National, and several other good hurdle races to his credit, Leo,,a prominent Auckland hurdle- horse, AVaiari, tho Easter Handicap winner, and perhaps Cavaliero. : The pony - Mtinapouri has now won throe good handicaps for his owner in a very brief period. Notwithstanding tho fact; that Waiata hiid> already started twice at the Avondalo meeting oa Wednesday, lie was mado favourite for the concluding event, and, had the distance been four or five furlongs, his ownor is of opinion that he would have won. As it was, ho led the field at a smart pace for over a. half a mile, but then he cracked up and could only run seventh at the finish. The New Plymouth horse Cyrene is being left at Ellorslie until after the Takapuna meeting next month. ; The Ancklaiid horseman, E. McMillan, rode three winners on the concluding day of tho Avondale meeting. ..He steered Waiata in his double,; and was also up on / Manapouri. Whatoshot, a bay Reldinp: by Musketeer from Una, was leading by twenty lengths at the end of the first mile in the'Avondale Steeples, but, at the second fenco of tho doublo, partejl with his rider, who was, however, fortunate enough to escape injury. When Piltopo was racing at Awapnni he was a maiden performer. It is not often that, a horse which has not won a race is burdened with list. 131b. Mr. J. E. Henrys loft for Nelson yesterday to be present at the .niepthiß of that club on Wednesday and Thursday. The Marlboroush Bating Clnb has every, reason to bo satisfied ' with the nominations received for the Autumn meeting. Quality and quantity alike aro well represented, and. if the handicapper, Mr. G. Morse, succeeds in plealing tho different owners, the club should have a record meeting. Tho glamour is now off tho Cuirassier peldmg John, but ho would again bo in demand were ho to win a hurdle race or two. In this connection it is interesting to- notice that the Waikato trainer, E. Hannon, who formerly jaced John, states that he is the best' jumper which he over owned, and, for two successive seaeons, ho hunted him himself, and the gelding nover once put h. foot wrong. Despite being down in tho weights, Ballarat is unablo to win a race, and it rather seems as if the old maro has lingered over long on the racecourse. The yearling Sinister filly which recently joined tho Porirua team, will be easy to distinguish for she is the most striking youngster in the big stable. Sho is very shapely and is quality all over. If-she is as good as she looks the stable will have another , Advanco or Achilles. r A JfclV.ourno. paper states that Waiimfca has very much improved sinco goin;,, to Australia. JiifMiifir by the good form shown by the. VV.airarapa mare Merrio Eose in the Lemgburn,Handicap at Awnpuni, Mr. W. Platt will soon have a winning'turn with ms mare. Trainer R. Knox had tried her very highly beforo the meeting and he qnite expected her to score.
Yankee, a maiden performer, well spoken of in this column early this month, won a race at tho Papakurn meeting on Snturday ,]a=t.
~ Wh , e n EmWem hopped out in front in the iield m tho Juvenile Handicnp at Awtipuni it seemed as if they would bo unable to.catch her, but, at the-straight entrance, she ran somewhat wido and Jjoijnerges, slipping up on the rails, beat her very comfortably in the run to the judges' boi. .; . ~.: - . • .:-.' :,
Writing to ,T. H. Grosser after arriving at. Oaoiaru, W. -Mould, who went south in ohargn of All.lied, stated* that tho son of Stepniak and Madder arrived in Rood condition. Already several prominent owners of hrood marcs Kavo booked nominations to Mr. J. .Buckley's korso, at Auckland and the Auckland Cnn winner will havo-no difficulty in securing a full list. >..■.-
