Commenting on the pronouncement of Mr. Balfour, Leader of the Opposition, iu favour of colonial wheat being free under tariff reform, the v Toronto correspondent of "The Times" reports that Mr. Balfour's statement has revived in-, .tarost in the policy of inter-Imperial preference, which had been deadened by the slow progress of the movement in Britain. : Mr. P. E. Smith (Unionist Mj>. for Walton,' Liverpool) states that an overwhelming majority of,the tariff reformers agree with Mr. Balfonr's decision. [A section of the Unionist press haa, in the interests of United Kingdom agriculture, protested against free colonial wheat.] , • ■ ' '■■ f FEEE-TEADE EALLY. London, April i 7. The Home Secretary, Mr. Winston Churchill, is arranging 2500 non-party Free-trade lectures for the coming year. The speakers will include Sir John Gorst, Lords Avebury and Braesey, Mr. Harold Cos : (ex-M.P.), and Dr. Macnamara • (Parliamentary Secretary ■to the Admiralty). The Minister is also arranging for conferences of professional, and i commorcial men. ■
Trades unions and agricultural societies are co-operating in raising a Freetrade fighting fund of £12,000. ;
